of course, if you find these pictures surprising: this is one of a very few exceptions in the whole system, and I don't know exactly, where else such old strechtes can be found (considering the acc/dec-lanes on exits), maybe on the A8. As I said, they are currently adding the shoulders here (and widening that bridge), and so, the missing de-/acceleration lanes will be added, too.
Speed limit there is (or was, because of construction side?) 120 eastbound, and 100 westbound (after the exit, it is 120).

and thanks for the screenshot

Currently it's completely rebuilt and shoulders and a 3rd lane northbound will be added (but these northbound 3 lanes will only be 3.5m wide and the northbound shoulder only 2.5m, because it's officially just an upgrading from 2+2 without shoulders to 2+2 with shoulders). A further upgrading to normal 3 lanes each direction is planned but won't be realised before 2015 because Berlin thinks that a completely new Autobahn through a nearly unsettled area in eastern Germany were there is not much traffic (A14 Magdeburg - Schwerin) is more important than upgrading overcrowded Autobahns in southern and western Germany.

Must have beeen made between the annexion of the rest of Czechia on March 15th 1939 and the outbreak of WW2 on the first of September.

Its acutally interesting to see that map, as Shell is a British/Dutch Firm.

exactly. people tend to compare brand new highways to highways that are 40, 50 or more years old. there are many parts of the autobahn that are below standard, but they're getting an upgrade. but since the german network is something like 12,000 km long it will take many years to get rid off all the faults.
2/3 of germany are hilly - many of the old roads are narrow, curvy and have many steep ascents and descents (if you're up for an adventure try the A8). nowadays no one would built highways like that anymore. today these highways would have been built mainly using tunnels and bridges (see the brand new A71/73, which is mainly tunnels - including germany's longest - and bridges).

if you want to compare german highways with the brand new highways in other countries you should have a look at all the upgraded and new autobahns in east germany - they are imaculous.

Dunno if something like this was already shown here, so I'll do.

A map which shows the Autobahn network of Germany and adjacent countries.
It doesn't might be that up-to-date, but at least the new shiny boomy Ostseeautobahn A20
is shown on the right corner

Nice amount of routes. But you've never been to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?
Shame on you

At least you have to go to Neubrandenburg!

When is autobahn 1 going to be extended northwards? the B 207 to connecting to the ferries in Puttgarden is a bitch. Can take well above 2 hours to drive those ~30 kms on the summer holidays!

Nope an "http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umweltp...nstaubplakette"

You need such a sticker that shows how much PM-10 your car pollutes to drive in a German city center. Now there are only a few city-centers, but that number will expand.

The entire Ruhr-area? That must raise hybrid-sales in the area...
