From my experience, there are enough German who drive until the end, but then there's nobody to let them merge, so traffic becomes stalled anyway. A while ago, i was on the A2 near Hamm, there is a baustelle (roadworks) there, and it goes from 2 to 1 lane (widening to 2x3). However, it took me an hour to get through it, in traffic that was very low on the rest of the route.

The concept definatly needs to be tuned in Germany.

The size of the grass is a bit too tall to be real.

I doubt if it peaked 600km of traffic jams above the average around that time.
Hmm, I saw up to 933km on wdr.de - so this maximum is not impossible.
Luckily I had no (real) jam on my tour to 'Emsland' on Friday.
Roadpics of this trip are comming later...

Here are firstly more than 4000 pictures of these roads:
In GoogleEarth - In GoogleMaps

Quick question! Can anyone tell me what speed limits there are, if any, on the motorway between Hamburg and the Danish border?

Mostly unlimited, but recommended speed: 130 km/h

Erm, Friday was the last school day before the holidays in I think eight German states. Aditionally, we had a long weekend (no work on monday) and the weather forecast was fantastic. So the 600km of jams is realistic.
Btw, the green line doesn't indicate the average length of jams but the number of reported jams.

Patrick, I never got pics of the shiny section of motorway you promised, I am sure they aren´t shiny anymore because crashbarriers loose shinyness fast.

Yes, the fuel prices are insame in Germany, but that´s not jsut because oil is expensive, it´s also because taxes in Germany are so expensive, they have to lower the taxes, I don´t see any other chance.
