They do, in some parts of the US and Canada they are very strict about when you may use them and when you may not.

I see. what I like about Germany is hat there is a big variaty of raods. You will see many types of different asphalt, roadmarkings, crashbarriers and so on. that´s definatly a good thing.

Timon, 6 years is very long. I wouldn´t bother waiting for something for 6 years

I was just saying that it is coming, finally. I mean, this motorway was planned to be build years ago (I don't know when).

I'd be fine as long as it is getting built. Germany is very lucky to have a transportation system that is AT LEAST constantly improving, unlike the U.S. where politicans debate about how wide to make the bike lanes on a bridge...

and what will they do with the old alignment?

will it be preserved to be an emergency route and a tunnel bypass route for dangerous transports?

Would you guys believe, that in DDR times this was a rest area by the motorway (of course A11)?

well, highway in communist times were often very bad, so it's no surprise. Will this A11 section get a new pavement soon?

I have no idea, but i will hardly wait until they start road works. This is only old part of A11. My idea why they don't care about it is, that this is the last section of motorway in Brandenburg, leading to nowhere (if you can call that 400.000 city, just across the border )

Right now they widen emergency lanes between exits Joachimsthal and Chorin (with exitlane reconstruction on Joachimsthal exit) and build new bridge on Oder-Havel-Kanal (works will be finished in January).

All pictures taken 13.09.2008, direction Berlin.

Traffic volumes on the northern part of A11 are only 8.000 vehicles a day. That barely requires a motorway in the first place. I can understand why this isn't a high priority road, but these conditions shouldn't be here in 2008.

Yes, especially not in Germany. So it seems that there isn't much traffic between Berlin and Szczecin. In the Netherlands, the Dutch Railways (NS) tried to get more people to Szczecin by extending the IC Amsterdam-Berlin to Szczecin, though only once a day. My uncle once took that train all the way to Szczecin but according to him, it was almost empty

For those who know German (or not), Broadcasting station ZDF has a program, "wetten dass" (I bet that I can...) about a guy who can identify a piece of Autobahn anywhere in Germany by just viewing a short video of it without signage etc.

Check it here

there are always 5 different bets and he was "Wettkönig" (winner of the show) because the audience liked his one most.
It's a traditional TV show for more than 20 years with about 10 million viewers!

This topic isn't shown often to such a big audience

But some years ago in the same TV show there was a kid (!) who knew all interchanges and junctions on German motorways!

It's impressive. Chris, why don't you do the same for the Dutch Autosnelwegen and try to get into the broadcasting programme on SBS6, "Ik wed dat ik het kan"?
