@svartmetall: public transportation and quite lots of autobahnen are the reason. to get from rhein-ruhr to rhein-main (200km) for example, you can choose (of course depends on where exactly you are) between A61 (mostly 2+3), A3 (3+3) and A45 (mostly 2+3). to get from köln to düsseldorf, take the A3 (4+4 and 3+3), the A59 (2+2) or the A57 (2+2 and 3+3). you have the choice

Germany also has an extensive train network, which probably causes a slight decrease in road traffic. I mean, with the new ICE-line completed, the travel time between Köln (Cologne, Keulen) and Frankfurt has become less than an hour. By car it still takes two hours.

German Autobahns are better divided in long-distance / local in urban areas. For instance, the A1, A2 and A3 are long distance Autobahns, while A40, A42, A46, A59 are more urban Autobahns.

I guess most of you already know this: the actual traffic situation in NRW and predictions.

The motorways I describe in Auckland tend to have very busy arterial roads adjacent to them and all of them are urban motorways cutting right through the city (much like the situation seen in America).

The amount of choice of travel in Germany is impressive though be it public transport or road based. Good on you Germans.

A quite good example why the congestion in Germany is not as high as somewhere else: Between Frankfurter Kreuz and Frankfurt Airport, the A3 would have over 190000 cars/day if the parallel motorway-like B43 did not exist which handles most of the traffic to the airport. Then there's the Frankfurter Kreuz with its own exits to the airport so that cars can reach it from four directions. Imagine it would have direct access only to one motorway like most other airports...
And I don't want to know what the AADT would be if the airport didn't have such an excellent connection to the rail system (ICE, regional trains and S-Bahn) ...

Perhaps 20 people killed in a busaccident on the Autobahn A2 near Hannover. A bus catched fire and "zahlreiche menschen" didn't get out of the bus on time. The exact toll is unknown yet.

www.nu.nl also reports of it now. It must be a living hell when you're stuck in something that's on fire and that you can't get out

They even mentioned it in the news over here. If it hadn't happened it would only be about the US elections.

This morning I heard it was a "technical problem". Must be wrong then.

A31 Autobahn Meppen - Leer

A drive on the A31 Autobahn in northwestern Germany. From Exit Meppen with the B402 to Interchange Dreieck Bunde with the A280, a distance of 50 kilometers. This is a road that's known for speeding, though there was little traffic this day.

It can't be 2 million, when the busiest road in the world (401 in Toronto) has less than half a million.

Nice video, Chris. This is so not Germany, too empty. The air turbines are amazing!

Those are the statistics offered by the German Government. If you would like to dispute them then please by all means conduct some proper traffic analysis (like they do) to ascertain true traffic volumes rather than estimating or relying on anecdotal evidence.
