These are quite common in the Rhein-Main Gebiet (Frankfurt). Guess in other metro areas as well.

Are those all new roads or do they include repaving and other maintenance projects?

Erweiterung = widening, Neubau = new construction

I'm not sure what all these projects are.

For instance, I really miss the A33 Borgholzhausen - AK Bielefeld and A44 AK Kassel - Eisenach. Also, the A1 in the Eifel is not mentioned.

BA = Bauabschnitt --> a part of the project is financed by the toll.
OU = Ortsumgehung --> new construction of a city bypass.
etc.

Where did you find the list? It probably indicates only projects financed by the toll, so this wouldn't be a complete list of all projects. There's lots of stuff missing...

This list contains only 'additional' projects (financed i.e. by the higher toll). You will not find projects where funds were already secured. And at least one or two additional lists are to come in the next weeks, as part of the economic stimulus packages.
I.e. the A44 Kassel-Eisenach is part of the "Verkehrsprojekte Deutsche Einheit" and will never be found in such a list. The few missing sections of VDE-projects are financed by the regular budget shortly after finishing of the planning process.

How is it with the plans of connecting the two parts of the A4? I saw they just build a new section near Olpe (passed there today ), but is that going to be extended? It would be difficult, because the terrain is quite hilly.

I don't think it get ever build. It not really that necessary, upgrading the A45 to 2x3 and completing the A480 near Gießen is enough I guess. Also, building the A44 between Kassel and Eisenach might become useful, but that project seems to progress awfully slow.

I see, thanks

By the way, I saw something strange today in Germany, on the A4 between Olpe and Cologne. On the westbound lane, the "Ausfahrt" sign of exit 20 is standing on a high pole. Why do they do that? I've never seen it before in Germany.

as far as i know, blankenheim-lommersdorf is in planning,

works on the section between junction Kelberg (at Dreiser Berg) and Rengen are in progress at the moment and will be finished in 2011, here two pictures of Liesertalbrücke near Daun-Rengen:
(july 2006)

(september 07)

but there's no action between lommersdorf and kelberg (which includes a big bridge over Ahr-River) -.- if they keep on building this motorway at this speed it will be finished when there's no more oil at the world...

I don't think Autobahnen becomes useless once there isn't oil enough anymore We'll just be driving in electrical cars or some other sort of energy-powered vehicles on the same road.

If that has to happen, large scale production of affordable electrical cars has to start very soon. However, in Silicon Valley, where lots of electrical cars are produced, is heavily suffering from the crisis, so this won't happen soon

Where's your fantasy? There are so many possible alternatives. Fuel cells, hybrid vehicles, synthetic fuel, ...

It's quite expensive to buy a new car, especially a fuel efficient one. So when there is not much money to spend, you won't buy an expensive car.

That's why new cars should become cheaper. The Dutch/Danish way of tax em to death so new/safer/cleaner cars are unaffordable to most is definatly not the best.

I think American car pricing is good, but there are very little choices. For example, a BMW 328 starts at about $30,000, but there aren't any BMW 320s or 318s, much less a diesel. Imagine getting a 318d for $27,000 (€19,443). I'm guessing that's how much it would be in the U.S.

Yeah that's wayyy too expensive. I can buy a well-equipped BMW 535 in the U.S. with that money.
