Why weird? You're not on A1 yet. Nice pics otherwise, it's really funny to see all these motorways through Ruhr surrounded by trees most of the time.

great pictures, a fine autobahn Ruhr is indeed a fascinating area with its dense autobahn system
The A 43 is most likely one of this motorways that you never drive from the beginning to the end of it (because of the parallely going A1). But is absolutely nececery for covering important connections with its parts.

Well, the weird factor is that you're actually driving away from Bremen. A similar thing is on the northbound A7 near Dreieck Hattenbach. You see destinations signed like Kassel, Hannover, Hamburg and.... Basel.

Yes, but you need a destination for the A1 northbound just before the interchange. Given the fact there's no exit before the interchange, you aren't literally driving away from Bremen, just geographically. I think it's really normal.

L418 Wuppertal (eastbound)

The L418 is an expressway along the southern side of Wuppertal. It features two tunnels, the longest is 1,8 kilometers long and features a 6% grade.

route:

This expressway looks quite scenic, and I like the water tower.

L74 Wuppertal - Solingen

The L74 is an even more scenic expressway from Wuppertal southwards to Solingen/Remscheid. It's very curvy.

route:

1. Aan de zuidkant van het Sonnborner Kreuz. Nu gaan we niet rechts (L418) maar rechtdoor (L74)

L141n Solingen

The L141n is an interesting expressway, since it was build as a part of the never-finished A54 from Brunssum to Plettenberg in the Sauerland area. This part runs solely through the city of Solingen (pop.163,000).

route:

1. De oprit van Solingen-Centrum naar de L141n

8. 50 is ook wat overdreven.

image hosted on flickr

10. Zelfs met 2x2 rijstroken.

A535 Wuppertal - Velbert

The B224 has been renumbered into A535 since november 2008. Before that, the B224 was an expressway, and the A535 was only 2km long between the Sonnborner Kreuz and exit Wuppertal-Dornap. It now extends all the way to Velbert.

route:

1. Het grootste knooppunt van Duitsland.
image hosted on flickr

2.
image hosted on flickr

3. Eerst de afslag naar de L418.
image hosted on flickr

4. Daarna naar de A535.
image hosted on flickr

5. Ik neem hier de A535.
image hosted on flickr

6. Daarna weer links, nogal wat rijstrookverplaatsingen.
image hosted on flickr

7. Je kan nog weer terug naar de A46
image hosted on flickr

8. Afslag Wuppertal-Dornap.
image hosted on flickr

9. A535 rechtdoor.

19. Afslag Velbert.

20. Laatste afslag aan de A535.
image hosted on flickr

21. Dreieck Velbert-Nord.
image hosted on flickr

22. Weer in de bosjes.

23. Een vrij scherpe bocht, ook voor rechtdoor.

24. Ik neem hier de A44 naar Essen.

B227 Velbert - Essen

The B227 starts as A44 from interchange Dreieck Velbert-Nord, and continues north as the expressway B227 into Essen. The part near Essen-Kupferdreh is quite new, opened in 2008.

route:

1. Vanaf Dreieck Velbert-Nord volgt snel de afslag Langenberg.
image hosted on flickr

2. Dit gedeelte is nog erg nieuw.
image hosted on flickr

3. Mooi asfalt.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

5. Toch is dit stukje nog vrij landelijk.
image hosted on flickr

6. Kupferdreh.
image hosted on flickr

7. Vanaf hier Gelbe Autobahn. Afslag Kupferdreh-Süd.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

9. Ausfahrt.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

11. Zeker gezien de bewegwijzering.
image hosted on flickr

12. Kupferdreh-Nord.
image hosted on flickr

13. Brug over de Ruhr.
image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

15.

Is A38 fully completed between Kassel and Leipzig ?

I will be using this route instead of A4

No, a short section is still missing near Breitenworbis. Should be completed in the end of 2009. And yes, A38 might be a good option considering all those baustelles on A4.

Incredible how many "hidden" expressways there are in Germany.
