It was planned to complete the entire Dresen-Prague motorway by the end of 2006 but construction works on the remaining section began in late 2007.

It`s the truth, unfortunately. The longest motorway construction in the Czech Republic.

We've already discussed the topic of D8 in here

You can see for yourself in Google Earth. There are parts which are very near to be finished (if it wasn't for the landslide) and then there are parts which had to be postponed due to complaints and the construction started very late. Saying they've been constructing it continuously for 11 years is not really true and makes the constructors look incompetent.

I used D1 at Monday 17th southward and Thursday 20th northward.

Like always there are advantadges and disadvantages. Since several years if not decades the D1 was the most evil motorway for me, given the bad condition, the length and that its very boring because you have nothign to see abroad the motorway.

But already last winter and even more now, i found the repairs encouraging. Some sections wich are already done are really nice.

But as always there are also the disatvantadges. It was told above, that there were 4 sections under construction between prague and brno, and 2 between brno and the border. In fact there were more especially at the brno-SK-border section. But it might be that there are some smaller works additionally.

These work were shown on electronic road signs very early and additionally every time 2km before, which was very helpful. What was a problem (like in other copuntries i travelled) was, that sometimes the signature was inconsistent. This means that maybe a sign from a former worksite was forgotten, that signs were missing, or in one case, that there was a restriction of speed because of street works, but there were none. The psychologic impact always is, that people ignore restrictions (more than they already and always do)

Both times there were big traffic jams. But always on the other side When i went southward i might have been 6km on the northward lane, when i came back it was around 15 or 20km on the southward lane. It seemed to be caused only by the road works.

Whilst betwenn Brno and the border only one lane per direction was open, there were no traffic jams.

How long shall it take to complete the modernisation at D1?

Expect 7-8 years. Its a complete renovation. There are about 25-35 sections in total.

That could feel like eternity. The outcome is great, but well you know...

Is there a common opinion now, if D8 will open in 2016 or 2018? MichiHH changed it, but the discussion here faded out with no final answer.

The opening is anticipated in 2016 according to ŘSD.

There is no final answer. ŘSD and the ministry have very little credit of opening anything on schedule, let alone seeing how this project evolved over time.

The only thing you can do here is a guesswork looking at the progress of the construction itself. Given that the major bridges that are still left to be done are being under construction right now and given that their construction could be managed within 2 years, it is possible that it will open in late 2016.

Here are two photo's from the beginning of August from one of those bridges on D8. Another big construction is the interchange of D8 and R63.

The next stage of reconstruction is starting on the motorway D2 (28-43km). There will be one lane in each direction during the works, the middle lane is designed to give a possibility to overtake. (1+2 turns to 2+1)

I had no idea what this meant, so I followed the link and ran it through Google Translate. There is an additional explanation, but I'm still not sure what it means. My guess is that it might mean that each direction will have one lane for the first seven kilometers and then two lanes for the final seven kilometers. Is that right?

Better than nothing. Will probably ease some congestion in Prague.

I live less than 5 minutes from the Blanka Tunnel. It's delay has been nothing short of an embarrassment, though I will be glad when it finally opens.
