It's too dangerous to do this without at least a class T3 temporary crash barrier between driving directions.

AFAIK there will be barriers between the two directions.

OTOH czech authorities already have some experience with both divided and undivided directions - it is said that if the length of the 2+2 section is longer than 3-4 kms, the barrier is much more needed than by those short ones.

Comprehensive website about the "modernisation" is available at www.novad1.cz

If the widening process involves the construction of any new bridges, I hope they look far enough ahead and build the new bridges such that they won't have to be replaced yet again when they eventually widen the D1 to 2x3 in the more distant future.

mcarling: AFAIK there is a space reserve for 3+3 regarding overpasses. New bridges on motorway are to be re-built in away that they can accomodate 3 lanes w/o shoulder.

PLH: yes, mostly concrete

Thanks. That's good news. Does anyone know the AADT between Prague and Brno?

To sleep or not to sleep, that is the question?

At least seven Czech tourists were killed and 44 injured in a bus crash on the A1 motorway .

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. some 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Zagreb, on the motorway connecting the Croatian capital with the central Adriatic coastal city of Split.

The bus crashed through the metal barriers in the middle of the motorway and overturned in the opposite lane near the tunnel Krpani.

The bus started "swaying" on the motorway moments before it crashed through the barriers.

The cause of the accident was drowsy driving.

This is the second worst accident on A1, after the one in 2008 when were killed 14 Slovaks in similar bus crash.

So please, take a rest before you start to Croatia....

My heartfelt sympathies go out to theirs families.........

Strumatic crashes like these always leave me feeling sad for the families of the victims.

Maybe caffeine tablets should not be illegal in the EU?

Maybe obligatory rest of the drivers should be really enforced and perhaps prolonged.

They could begin with the second one perhaps in the autumn. So far there is no construction.

Croatia is outside EU for the moment. The real problem is enforcement, not duration...

What has EU to do with it? I think Croatia is perfectly able to pass its own laws and regulations concerning this issue without any EU assistance. Anyway, this is probably wrong thread for this.

Czech government approved the transportation department plans for PPP in the case of 18 kms of D3 north of the České Budějovice. Further decisions should follow. The construction is schedulled to begin not sooner than 2014. More than half of the lenght would be in the track of present half profile I-3 (although some adjustements will be needed due to the width standard changes +1m).

I personally dont agree with PPPs... I prefer private motorways to PPP. PPP is tricky. Anyway I have some doubts this plan would commence.

Why do you think PPP's don't work out? They're used all over Europe and these projects tend to be faster than government-run projects, especially in Germany.

Wait a minute, they're not going to turn this into an actual toll road with toll booths? Because the minister was drawing comparisons with France, where most PPP projects are private toll roads...
