On Wednesday I'm going to tour around Austria, Germany, France, Benelux and the UK in a French (Lyon) registered van, which is going to be made available to me tomorrow here in Mayrhofen. If I'm not mistaken it has a Télépéage tag fitted, so it'll be interesting to see how it works...

A84 Caen - Rennes

Part II of the A84 Autoroute in Bretagne; from Avranches to Rennes. This is the only A-route in Bretagne.

Of the eleven times I had to stop at French toll plazas today, only once was there no queue. I paid by credit card each time and most of the drivers in the queues ahead of me seemed to be doing so also. I saw two drivers pay cash.

The are designated lanes for credit cards and lanes with manned toll booths where you can pay either way. You obviously went to those only, because I happen to drive in France a lot for a living and I hardly have any problems.

It sounds like you went through the manual toll booths, mcarling? I always go for the CB lanes with only a payment terminal. First you insert the toll ticket and then the credit card immediately in it, and you get it out in less than a second.

I ended up in a lane staffed by a human only once. The other ten times there was just a machine to deal with. I don't remember for sure if any of the machines accepted cash; I think a few of them did, but I wasn't paying much attention because I was paying by credit card.

It's funny how there's always a queue at manual booths, and CB lanes are almost empty.

I don't know any different. I usually have 3 or 4 cars in front of me at the most.

Talking about Télépéage it's possible to have one On Board Unit to travel in France and Spain:

I checked on my way back today. The three eastern-most toll plazas along the A8 have automated machines that accept either bank cards or cash -- no bank card only lanes.

The A8 is operated by Escota, a rather small concession company, part of the larger ASF I believe. Maybe they have different toll stations than most other locations.

There are companies that rent toll transponders for a small fee (+ toll charges incurred).

I used service provided by these guys two years ago when taking an Italian-plated car for an extended trip in France (their site is interesting also a reference for all types of toll systems, classifications and categories in Europe).

I drove the A8 multiple times this month (Draguignan - Italian border) and it said 'Da vinci' everywhere. Thought they control the autoroute. The amount of toll stations is absolutely annoying and holding up traffic. The highway has great scenics, but is fairly expensive. I believe there are 4 toll stations between Cannes and Monaco.

Vinci Autoroutes is the parent company of ASF, Cofiroute and Escota.
