The A8 is worth the tolls. It's multiple times faster than taking the old coastal road.

I didn't know the difference in distance was quite that big. I was thinking the A26 would be less congested.

From where to where? I always use A26 from Calais to Lyon or Mont Blanc. Starts at Calais, then a short hop on the A4 at Reims, and then back on the A26 again before getting on the A5 at Troyes.

In one of Chris' sets of photos yesterday, there's a "Lille, Melun, Montereau-fault-Yonne suivre Paris" on the A19 approaching the junction with the A5.

I remember driving through A86 tunnel in a late Sunday night. Very interesting experience. It was empty, and it was extremely noisy when I opened windows.

Are motorbikes allowed there?

I always see plenty of motorbikes in the daytime in these tunnels, so I reckon so...

A86 should not have Autoroute status. Elsewhere in France some N-roads cannot get A-status because they don't have sufficient bridge clearance (for instance N225 near Dunkerque).

The A86 Duplex tunnel is forbidden to motorcycles (and limited to vehicles lower than ~2 metres) because another tunnel of similar length but on a slightly different route was planned for the rest of traffic. The other tunnels on the A86 are open to everyone.

N12: Rennes - Brest

The N12 is a voie expresse (expressway) in western France. It runs from Rennes via Saint-Brieuc and Morlaix to Brest. It's a four-lane highway and entirely grade-separated.

Part I: Rennes - Saint-Brieuc:

The Voie Georges-Pompidou/Voie Express Rive Droite - expressway along the right (north) bank of the Seine in Paris - has been converted into an "urban boulevard."

Nothing has been done so far. Only plans have been unveiled.

The article says "the expressway...reopened Saturday, September 1, after seven weeks of works. Result: an 'urban autoroute' transformed into an 'urban boulevard'...." In the next paragraph, lanes "have been" made narrower and traffic lights installed. And then talk about what traffic was like (better than feared) on Monday and particular Tuesday (the first day of school for the year) of this week.

Looks like they've done something, although it appears the facilities for pedestrians (crossings, bus stops and the like) aren't finished.

You could run down this weekend and check it out!

Ah you're right, I was looking at the second link.

Anyway, I doubt if this plan is well-conceived. It was a major route with high traffic volumes. Traffic models can easily be manipulated to generate the politically desired output, I've personally seen public transport models in the Netherlands being upgraded with more passengers to justify an otherwise unprofitable investment. Traffic models are not some holy - always right - machines, the output depends on the input.

can't wait to see whole city stuck in traffic... so nobody can move anywhere... maybe then they will realize how dumb they are... or perhaps they are too dumb to realize that.

eh

first: no one will walk there except tourists, the voie is very low and it's not practical to use for daily walking commutes

second: reducing car and road infrastructure might be reasonable if in the same time improving public transport, they don't do that
