Most recent map of the Metropolitan French motorways (yellow + red). The green one will be opened in December of this year.

On top of these, there are also motorways (with the name or without it) in Réunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and New Caledonia, and small suburban sections in French Guiana and Tahiti.

Does anyone know what these "points de répère" are?:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autorou...rance)#Sorties

(The entries like "PR204" at key points in the exit list. It looks like theyre distances from the east end of the Autoroute, but are they actually posted or was the writer of this article just trying to be helpful...?)

I suspect they are kilometer markers. I haven't heard of the "PR" abbreviation though, usually it's a PK (point kilomètre) or borne kilomètre

Another French street named after a convicted Philadelphia cop-killer:

Naming a street after him is apparently just as controversial as his trial. Let's not put anti-Americanism or French-bashing back in the spotlight again.

I'm sorry, but I just read this.

It's inexcusable: how is this their business? At least Saint-Denis, six years ago, could claim they were protesting against the death penalty (although I'm not clear how that's their business, and there must be more appropriate ways to do that than naming streets after convicted murderers) but he's been off death row for nearly a year and no one serious (multiple appellate courts...) has ever questioned his guilt of the actual murder. This is a blatant act of contempt for my city and contempt for justice. And, I have to believe, of fashionable anti-Americanism.

Perhaps Philadelphia should name a street after Jacques Mesrine, who was deliberately murdered in cold blood by an officially sanctioned French police operation.

In this country, we name streets (and towns, and counties, and at least one college...) after LaFayette.

Looks like a traffic calming device. It's just a few hundred meters south of the German border. I'm surprised to see it in such a rural area.

I thought so, but as Chris said - absolutely weird placement for that.
In Hungary they use it very wisely at state roads at entrances to villages and it works great.

Hybrid rail/road tunnel in Vallorcine, near Chamonix:

https://maps.google.ch/maps?q=Vallor...id=po-60647945

It's a ~1.8 km tunnel built for the railway but used by cars when the Montets pass road is closed because of snow. Now it has a railway track and a narrow road lane, but it is being upgraded so as to have a wider road lane (paving also the space between the two rails, just like at level crossings). Obviously trains and road vehicles don't use the tunnel at the same time.

Hybrid rail/road tunnels are quite rare. I know of one in Alaska, and one in Seattle (although the latter used only by tramways and urban buses).

N165 Brest - Nantes

Some photos from my trip to Bretagne in July.

The condition of N165 varies, at some places it has worn-out asphalt and a substandard design, on other locations it resembles a full motorway. If they want to upgrade this to A82, there is some work to be done, especially between Brest and Quimper.

I covered the road all the way to Nantes, but didn't want to flood the this page.

Here are another batch of photos:

Looks like this road was originally built with concrete tiles and then covered with tarmac (pic. 41).

Can someone explain to me what is the deal with the emergency lane marking in France. I mean instead of being an uninterrupted line like in all the countries(which means you can not pass it) theirs is interrupted. Did they try to save some money or what?
