In general, French roadside restaurants are pretty good...UNTIL the masses start passing through to their holiday destinations. By that time, some of the 'aires' tend to become extremely busy. The cleaning of toilets etc. just can't cope the immense flow of people anymore, resulting in dirty, overcrowded places.

In Germany they seem to be dealing with that much better, although the number of people / tourists stopping at the roadside restaurants may be lower. In general, German roadside's have a much more 'welcoming' atmosphere.

Dutch roadside rest's are not even worth mentioning. Services tend to be bad, toilets are often extremely dirty and because of the lack of space these area's often are very cramped, leaving to little space to park the car.
One of the few positive examples is roadside rest area 'De Lucht' near 's Hertogenbosch alongside the A2. Also 'Den Ruygen Hoek' alongside the A4 near Schiphol is worth mentioning. I gueass those are among the largest in The Netherlands?

French services are my favourites in all of Europe. I always enjoy the simplest of meals with a small glass of wine and cheese after. And I always have a feel-good mood whenever I'm there. Toilets are usually immaculate. And when they are cleaning the gents, you are urged to use the ladies instead. At Total stations there is a free eau d' toilette dispenser.

Drinking wine and then driving -- what a fantastic idea!

Who says I'm driving after? I stop overnight on a lot of these services in France. Either way, you're allowed one small glass of wine with a hot meal in France on motorway services. And I do...

I really like this bridge. Is it a one-off design, or are there others like it?

A new small stretch of the N 124 in the SW of the country is opened since 15/12/12.
Just in the east of the city of Auch, continuation of the 2x2 towards Toulouse.
I took it and it's a very good road. Unfortunately ,only a few km.
This road between the spanish border and Toulouse is more and more prefered by truckers because they avoid the A64 toll highway in the south along the Pyréneans mountains.
And the time lost is not very important.
For me, from Dax (see google maps for who is interested in) to Toulouse, I lost only 20 minutes by this national road instead of the A 64 I can take near Orthez or Pau.
And with less fuel and zero toll.
see link from a french website:

If you are unlucky, you can loose a lot of time at the toll booth.
As I drove from Forbach towards Metz, at the booth on the A4, we all had to back out, because the guy at the barrier couldn't pay, his 20 euro bill was not accepted by the machine and it seemed it was his only money. After that I only used the credit card ones.

I so hate these booths.
Also, for just some 20 minutes of driving I had to pay over 5 euros.
