No Eastern bypass (it's U/C with no clear opening date) no car-friendly (narrow and maze-like) street network, the only motorway crossing the city is partly tolled.

Didn't they recently built a tunnel linking two formerly disjoints highways?

A50 and A55 are now joined by Tunnel du Vieux Port, but A55 is congested even in weekends, especially at the junction with A7 (which is the one-way A557). Plus, Tunnel du Prado-Carénage (part of the A50/A55 scheme through the city) is tolled.

When complete, A507/Rocade L2 should solve many of these problems, but it seems to be delayed again and again and there's no realistic opening date yet (though it's been U/C for a long time now). As of today, the city's eastern bypass is a bunch of local roads bodged together which does not really save much time against driving through downtown.

The city's metro is also badly congested. Everything between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence is jammed in rush hours. And with Viaduc de Martigues being refurbished and cut to one lane per direction, there are also big problems west of the city.

And very poor public transportation.

The tunnel Prado Sud opened to traffic in Marseille on 16 November. It connects Avenue du Prado with A50 and improves access to the southern part of the city. It appears to be a double-deck tunnel, but the permitted height of vehicles is only 3.2 m. Clearance in the tunnel is 3.6 m, however.

Nice! I'll give it a try next week, since I'm now living there . It will sure clean up the mess that's like to drive that route through surface streets.

I recorded French A9 from the Spanish border to Montpellier:

First one features widening works in Perpignan bypass. As of today, all three lanes have never been opened, though they seem complete (final asphalt layer poured, road paint ready), and they are doing some heavy repair works in a bridge.

Second one is only meant to sado-masochists willing to experience what it's like to drive 200 kilometers on a straight 3-lane motorway at an uniform speed

And third one features Montpellier bypass, which will be twinned starting to 2014 by building a parallel motorway for through traffic, which will be routed a little bit further west and will apparently feature no toll gates, so one will be able to drive from Le Boulou to Vienne with no stopping at any toll

Kind of narrow some of the ramps and access. But it seems much easier to get around Marseille.

Intriguing maze of tunnels there. I like it. There's also an eastern belt under construction.

There is another curiosity there, the A557 one-way motorway:

https://maps.google.ch/maps?q=Marsig...,+Francia&z=16

The only other one-way motorway I know is the M2 in Adelaide, but it is reversible (as it is for peak hour traffic) and it is going to be doubled:

https://maps.google.ch/maps?q=Adelai...ralia&t=k&z=18

Probably there are other temporarily one-way motorways (when a direction is opened before the other), like in Toulon:

https://maps.google.ch/maps?q=Tolone...ancia&t=m&z=13

But I think the A557 will remain as it is forever.

Does the R9 in Charleroi, Belgium, count?

This is one of the shortest motorways in France, it`s about 1,5km long.

Saw a report on the France 2 evening news last night (I get it here through TV5): Speed limit on the Paris Périphérique (which was described as the busiest freeway in Europe) is dropping to 70 on January 1. Most striking thing is, the report said the average speed is 37. Really?

This may mean people do 80 out of rush our and 0 in rush hour...

Boulevard Périphérique is technically not a motorway or even expressway, but a city road with priority from the right. People will likely drive as fast as traffic allows anyway.

It's not the busiest road in Europe. I have never seen actual AADT values, only claims for the entire ring road length (which is not how traffic volumes are measured). Considering the widest segment of the Boulevard Périphérique has 8 lanes and it is used to maximum capacity at most times of the day, it is unlikely to exceed 250,000 vehicles per day at any segment.

A86 (the second périphérique) maxes out at 254,000 vehicles per day, and another spot carries 244,000 vehicles per day. A6 peaks at 290,000 vehicles per day in southern Paris and is the busiest stretch of road in France. A1 in northern Paris peaks at 240,000 vehicles per day. These stretches (especially A1 and A6) are much wider than the BP.
