From Chi, the first letter of Christ in Greek (well, it is a Greek word) - it looks like an X.

Not really. From A68 northeast of Toulouse heading for Castres, but it's gonna take a while before it reaches that city.

A 68 goes to Albi. Are there plans to expand it to Castres? As rpc08 said, the pics are just featuring the new Puylaurens bypass on N126.

Is it going to be the A680 towards Castres?

A quick look at Google and there is a lack of N126 between the A61 and D87 (it's the D826 - a classic renumbering), so you could see a rerouting of the N126, perhaps as Autoroute.

God I hate the current renumbering in France. I think I went on about 15 roads following the old N20 from Paris to Toulouse this summer.

At least renumbering N126 to D826 makes sense, as the last two numbers remain the same. Here you have situations where the old National Route 1 is renumbered to State Route 60 or State Route 83, and the old National Route 31 is renumbered to State Route 89.

Let me introduce the Autoroute Soixante-quinze (A75) La Méridienne

In my opinion, this is the most spectacular Autoroute in France, although the A40 might have a more impressive scenery.

my A75 Flickr set

1. Entering the A75 near Pézenas, still a while until Millau. This is still in the flatter parts of the Herault departement.

2. Touristic sign in mediterranean landscapes.
image hosted on flickr

3. Mountains begin to show up in the distance.
image hosted on flickr

4. Nearing the A750 interchange to Montpellier.
image hosted on flickr

5. Touristic exit.
image hosted on flickr

6. The road is becoming more curvy.
image hosted on flickr

7. Town of Lodève, this part of A75 is very new.
image hosted on flickr

8. The time before this one I had to drive through Lodève, now the A75 is completed here.
image hosted on flickr

9. They had to construct a bunch of tunnels.
image hosted on flickr

10. The roadway goes through the mountains like a snake.
image hosted on flickr

11. We have to get all the way up those mountains.
image hosted on flickr

12. The roadway is quite narrow.
image hosted on flickr

13. The motorway is leading into this gorge.
image hosted on flickr

14. We have to climb another 700 meters.
image hosted on flickr

15. We're driving up there in a few minutes.
image hosted on flickr

16. Extreme curves, 70 km/h limit.
image hosted on flickr

17. Ascending quickly.
image hosted on flickr

18. We turn left before that rockwall.
image hosted on flickr

19. My car didn't go much faster than 90 km/h here.
image hosted on flickr

20. Climbing lane for trucks.
image hosted on flickr

21. We gained 200 meters in the last few kilometers.
image hosted on flickr

22. Another tunnel ahead.
image hosted on flickr

23. Another 100m in 2km
image hosted on flickr

24. We made it onto the plateau. There's more climbing ahead though, as the A75 is the highest motorway of France.
image hosted on flickr

25. Over 700m now. An additional 400 m is left.
image hosted on flickr

26. Made it over 800m.
image hosted on flickr

More next.

27. I once cyled to there from the Gorges du Tarn with my city bike
image hosted on flickr

28. Oh yeah.
image hosted on flickr

29. Entering the toll part of A75 (Viaduc de Millau).
image hosted on flickr

30. There was quite some holiday traffic in late August.
image hosted on flickr

31. Next exit: 20 kilometers.
image hosted on flickr

32. The desolate Causses.
image hosted on flickr

33. Still a couple of hours to Clermont-Ferrand. The next 230 kilometers are still challenging for those driving with a larger trailer (caravan).
image hosted on flickr

34.

35. Let's have it.
image hosted on flickr

36. Tolls!
image hosted on flickr

37. I was surprised to see Cahors here, it's all the way to the west on the A20.
image hosted on flickr

38. quatre-vingt-six kilometers before I leave the A75.
image hosted on flickr

39. Cahors exit. Also to the marvellous Gorges du Tarn.
image hosted on flickr

40. Is this the wild west or what?
image hosted on flickr

41. Distances.
image hosted on flickr

42.
image hosted on flickr

43. 888 meters
image hosted on flickr

44. Nice distant views.
image hosted on flickr

45. Landscaping is turning into a bit less mediterranean.
image hosted on flickr

46. We'll drive there later.
image hosted on flickr

47. Rodez exit.
image hosted on flickr

48. Still a while until Clermont-Ferrand.
image hosted on flickr

49. Entering the Lozère departement.
image hosted on flickr

50. Another pass.
image hosted on flickr

51. Quite a descent.
image hosted on flickr

52.
image hosted on flickr

53. And what a view.
image hosted on flickr

54. Valley of the river Lot.
image hosted on flickr

55.
image hosted on flickr

56. That's my exit.
image hosted on flickr

57.

58.

59. Motorway climbs to 1100+ meters further ahead.
image hosted on flickr

60. Tunnels.

61.

62. Views

63. Mende exit.

That's it!

The A75 looks much more interesting than an average French motorway. Too bad it's not leading to anywhere particular from my direction, but if nothing else, I must see the Millau viaduct some day.

Nice photo-trip Chris... all that scenery (mountains e.t.c.) looks like Greece, section from Thebes, before Lamia (Central Greece) until Larisa (Thessaly)
