The emergncy tunnel of the Fréjus tunnel will quite certainly be opened to traffic. I suppose it will have a single lane, as the TBM that is boring it is around 9 m in diametre, not enough for a two lane tunnel with a standard width carriageway.

A 9 m bore is sufficient for a two lane tunnel.

Apparently it is smaller than I thought: http://www.sftrf.fr/doc/general/GALE...20galerie1.pdf

I don't have enough resolution to read the measurements on the blueprint but, I agree, it looks a lot smaller than 9 meters. Maybe about 6 or 7 meters.

So if it is opened to traffic, then it would only be a single lane 4m wide, with two small 1m shoulders. However, if it was 7m wide, then there could be two 3.5m lanes, but no shoulders.

You need to have a 3.5 m lane width at 4 meters height too. So the bore of a tunnel is always much wider than the road width. To support two 3.5 m wide lanes, you need a bore diameter of at least 9 meters.

One of the PDF available on SFTRF's website says that the interior diameter is 8 m, so the TBM diameter should be around 8.8 m.
Around 1.8 out of 6.5 km of the French side of the service tunnel have been bored until now. Works on the Italian side should start this year.

Since the walls are curved, that would only work for zero-height vehicles.

Epinal- Basel Route.
I have few options but would like to chose the best one: it'll be overnight drive so need to get to Basel fast . Also: i cannot find any tolls between Luxembourg-Epinal, or there are none?

The only one thing I can say is that the A31.fr from Border L/F to Toul near Nancy is toll free.

Vinci autoroutes might be just the best in Europe. expensive, but very well maintained, with awesome rest areas, and great services - like this app: (and no, I'm not working for them)

trés bien, j'aime cette application mais l'autoroute doit être trop chère.
une question, how strictly are the speed limits enforced there in France? |

Yes, I believe the new Vinci network is a merger with Corfiroute and ASF (Autoroutes du sud de la France).
