^weird how in France some decades ago they put motorways in the middle of the cities (A4 Reims, A6 Lyon), now they are doing the opposite.

They are still vital to keep intracity traffic moving. Motorways are not only for long-distance traffic.

How many years ago new section of A4 (Reims bypass) was built?

It opened on 23 November 2010. So about 1.5 years.

When it opened I was hoping that I could travel from Calais to either Metz, Lyon or Geneva on one toll ticket, but they have built new toll plazas on the new diversion at Reims, so it's still paying and grab a new ticket a few miles down the road.

Maybe they realized that heart attack rates at the toll booths would skyrocket if such toll tickets were to be issued.

don't they know that if they reduce the rates, the number of users and therefore the revenue will increase? that's a matter of simple common sense...

No. The price elasticity of demand for toll roads is low. A large reduction in the rate results in a small increase in the number of users. Cutting the rate in half might result in an increase of 5-10% in the number of users.

What is the highest toll for a passenger car in France that you can get on a single ticket? I drove from Genève to Reims on one ticket and it was about € 48.

I think that is the longest stretch on one ticket, and the highest. That route serves three autoroute operators: SANEF, APRR and ATMB. The highest after that must be Reims-Lyon and Paris-Lyon. And after that I think it's Rouen-Tours. Unfortunately Paris-Bordeaux gets interrupted at Tours.

Like I said, I was hoping Calais-Metz/Lyon/Geneva would have been possible after they have finished the diversion at Reims, but this is still not the case.

Edit: Highest in Italy I have done on one ticket is Brenner-Naples and Turin-Naples.

Brenner-Taranto, Turin-Taranto (and maybe Tarvisio-Taranto) should beat it...

The most expensive in Italy is Ventimiglia-Taranto (88€). You can verify that on www.autostrade.it

On the A14 I have never been further then ca 50 km south of Pescara, and on the A1 an Alte Stazione blocks further ticket travel at Naples.

nice vids.
I would consider N4 instead of A4 as well, but who wants to drive 450km in the middle of nowhere with slower speed.

this policy with high tolls isn't good for road safety and evironment. In Slovenia we introduced vignettes to get the traffic to the motorways, I don't know what are they doing in France.
