They introduced the law so the driver can check by himself if he's good to go or not after a drink.
Sounds stupid to me, but as a French citizen I'm used to see our nanny state go after us all the time...

Finally looking at that ranking of most expensive autoroutes someone posted here a few days ago...

"Autoroute du Pique-Prune"? That one's new to me....

A28 is free north of Rouen. The actual toll between Rouen and Tours is much higher on a per kilometer basis.

That doesn't surprise me - they had a per-kilometer rate for the A86, although they did at the end note that the only actual toll was on that new tunnel.

I was commenting on the name, though.

I can confirm that France forbids GPS devices from showing speed cameras warnings, but how can they enforce this?

This may be a stupid question - I have no idea how GPSes work - but can they take action against, um, GPS providers (probably the wrong term) who include that information in their databases?

As far as I know, in France there is no law against databases in navigation devices, but camera scanners are contraband.,

A major accident occurred yesterday on A13 east of Caen. Luckily I was driving the other direction.

A22 Lille

This is the first French photo set of my Tour de Bretagne 2012.

A22 in Lille. Much to my surprise, it's actually composed of two separate sections, the well-known northern section, which is the longest, but also a short, 2 kilometer southern section between A1 and A23/A27. The N227 expressway links both sections.

The entire A22 is toll free.

N227 Villeneuve-d'Ascq (Lille)

This photo set falls between the A22 above, and shows the N227 expressway in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, an eastern suburb of Lille.

I don't believe for a minute anything like that so close to the Netherlands was a surprise to you!

This question was probably asked many times, but how strict is the French government on speeding?

France has a lot of speed cameras on highways. They are less common in cities.

A29 Pont de Normandie

A video of the Pont de Normandie (Normandy Bridge) near Le Havre. It maybe even is the most impressive bridge I've ever driven, and I've driven many, but this one stands out due to its steepness, giant main spain and extremely tall pylons (stats in the video). If you drive it, the entire horizon disappears and you can only see the sky, it's that steep.

I thought that E71 ran from Kosice (Slovakia) to Split (Croatia) via Hungary, but now I see it has been rerouted to France! (It is E17. There is another E-route goof near here, where E07 is signed as E70).
