Mixed response as less than half of BBC staff opt for Salford Monday, 04

January 2010

The North West’s sporting legacy appears to be substantially better than its marketing clout as just 26% of the BBC’s marketing, communications and technology staff have agreed to move to MediaCityUK.

Meanwhile 58% of Sport has said yes, as did 56% of Radio 5 Live’s morning team and 50% of 5 Live’s news staff.

The first new employees will head to Salford this year and the new statistics show how many of the 924 affected staff have opted to head North.

In total 428 have said yes, that includes 45% of future media and technology, 26% of BBC Learning and 31% of the children’s department.

This is despite a package, which includes cash to pay for new carpets and curtains, expenses to go house-hunting in Manchester and a relocation payment of £5k.

Those who've decided not to go to MediaCity have a year to find new jobs in the BBC or they can take redundancy.

Meanwhile 5 Live's boss Adrian van-Klaveren has been blogging on the move for the BBC and in his latest update wrote:

"We aim to sound like a radio station free of any metropolitan bias which covers events and stories in every part of the UK. A base outside London should make that easier to achieve to the full - as I've written here before, if you were starting 5 live today I'm certain you would not choose be based in London."

Moving to Salford - an end-of-year progress update

Quote:
One of the things I aim to do on this blog is to tell the story of 5 live's move to Salford. As 2009 draws to a close, it's a good moment to sum up how the planning for the move is progressing.

We've made a lot of progress in terms of being able to say who will be part of the station in Salford. We start our new weekday schedule on Monday January 11th 2010 with a set of presenters who are committed to making the move and being part of 5 live at our new home in the north-west of England. The latest person to commit is Shelagh Fogarty so I'm delighted to say that her award-winning partnership with Nicky Campbell will continue after we've moved to Salford in mid-2011. Overall we will have a line-up of talented and experienced broadcasters who I think will be able to take 5 live from strength to strength over the next few years.

January 11th will also see the launch of Tony Livesey's late night programme from Manchester, already the home of Stephen Nolan's programme. Nighttime editor Jonathan Aspinwall wrote in more detail about moving Nighttime to Manchester earlier today. Moving this programme will give us good practical experience of moving a team and output from London to Manchester as well as being a significant shift in 5 live's centre of gravity.

The building which will be our new home is now being fitted out with cabling and technology and all the other things needed to make a state-of-the-art broadcasting centre. Once that is finished (and it's a huge job), we'll begin a process of testing and trying out our new surroundings before moving programmes in a phased way during 2011. We are trying to achieve some very specific benefits. For the BBC as a whole it's about connecting better with audiences wherever in the UK they live and in particular improving the BBC's performance and reputation in the North of England.

For 5 live, it should help us offer a more distinctive agenda, tailored to the interests of our audience, with as broad a range of voices and contributors as possible. We aim to sound like a radio station free of any metropolitan bias which covers events and stories in every part of the UK. A base outside London should make that easier to achieve to the full - as I've written here before, if you were starting 5 live today I'm certain you would not choose be based in London. Moving something already established raises another set of issues but it seems to me that 2009 has been a year where we've laid some very important foundations for making the move as smoothly and seamlessly as possible.

BBC @North to discuss £500k commission opportunities Wednesday,

06 January 2010

Liverpool and Manchester are the locations for two upcoming sessions to be held by the BBC's @North project. The events, hosted by project director Mario DuBois, will help regional companies get to grips with how they can produce new interactive content for CBBC and CBeebies.

The @North pilot scheme has been conceived to help the broadcaster develop relationships with firms in the North of the country ahead of its move to MediaCityUK.

At its heart is the development and delivery of interactive content for the "technology savvy audience" that tunes in to CBBC and CBeebies.

DuBois will be at Liverpool's Parr Street Studios tomorrow at 4.30pm for a Q and A session, before moving on to the next Northern Digitals event at Manchester's MadLab on 14 January at 6pm.

Following on from the events an application pack for @North will be available to download from the Northwest Vision and Media website.

(Incidentally, those awaiting NVM's new site from Mando can see a new look holding page prior to the official launch now).

just posted a new article, with news about ITV resuming talks with Peel and Little Airplane considering a move to mediacity.

MediaCity Round-Up: ITV resume talks, BBC launch jobs site and…Wonder Pets!

hopefully ITV will be back on track now...wonder how long until they confirm, and we start to see some progress on that side of the site.

Quite interesting to see the Guardian spinning the ITV move as the 'demolition of Coronation street'...(link)

Will Les Ferdinand pop over from BBC Sport to vandalise the new blue peter garden like he (allegedly) did a couple of decades back?

Little Airplane plans landing at MediaCity
By Simon Binns

American children's television company Little Airplane is considering a move to MediaCity on Salford Quays.

According to www.mediacityblog.com, Little Airplane will be visiting the site this week and the report said founder Josh Selig “has confirmed they are interested in MediaCity,” although no decisions have yet been made.

Little Airplane has offices in New York and London, and currently creates ‘3rd & Bird' for CBeebies, which will relocate to MediaCity as part of BBC Children's, and 'Wonder Pets!' for Nickelodeon Jr.

Selig was previously a writer on Sesame Street, and received ten Emmy Awards for his writing on the show.

Looks a bit like the new tram now running in Manchester but in old Metrolink colours.

I think they just made one up or grabbed it from somewhere else, the map on the ticket vending machine isnt a Manchester one either. Though if you turned the current one upsaide down it might look a little like that.

How do all. I got married the other day (yay). So firstly, Jerb, thanks for the reply RE City tickets. I just never got a chance to thank you as I was busy getting my shit together.

Anyway, here's the point of my post. Somebody close to my missus turned up at the reception and it turns out he's a senior member of some inspection team who're going about inspecting all the work that's been going on at Mediacity. After having a wee chat with him, he dropped me a bit of a bombshell. Turns out that most of the buildings close to completion at MC have been condemned due to "third world standard plumbing". He didn't mention the BBC building itself, but he said the profile flats behind the Beeb block as well as that tall office and hotel section are practically unusuable because of the piss poor work carried out. According to him, it's going to take Peel a lot of money to correct these wrongs, if they decide to correct them.

If the work isn't carried out, they'll be uninhabitable in 5 to 10 years, such is the poor standard of plumbing.

Not surprisingly, I was pretty bloody shocked to hear this. He was incredulous himself that such a thing can happen in this country with such a development. We both agreed Britain has a history of taking the piss with financing major projects, but he said he'd never seen anything like this.

Anybody know anything else about this?

Sounds like every new residential development I've visited in Manchester! A lot of flats are simply falling apart due to shoddy workmenship and materials, not particularly suprised it's the same in MC.

Congratulations matey. I waited. Could have got you a ticket as season ticket holders could buy an extra two. Sorry.

BTW. I hope there's nothing wrong with your plumbing.
