What is this place currently used for (circled in red), will they build a new tower here?

They may have to be careful not to block the view for W Hotel guests.

Truly epic. By the time they done with all the skyscrapers, this Pudong is no longer a swamp but a floating concrete and steel.

The 2nd tower is coming along nicely. The cladding of the W hotel complex should finish later this summer.

Also, in the backround it looks like 21st Century Mansion is close to being finished as well. Luijiazui district is filling out nicely.

i dont think that plot circled in red matters, because look, the view of bund from w hotel is already completely blocked by the residential apartments and offices in front of it

I noticed today they have removed the construction fence from the front entrance area of the first tower. They also had laid fresh asphalt, paint, and even a few bushes. I don't know if they're planning to partially open the building soon or what, anyone else have an idea?

I don't think they'll build anything there... it looks like a sport complex, with a baseball park and tennis court, but I could be wrong on that

The downtown Shanghai (Pundong, I believe) is still actually pretty small. It’s only that corner of Shanghai. So although that last image may look dramatic, it's only from that view that the skyline would look that way. So it's a little deceiving. I'm disappointed with the view from the observation deck on the new World Financial Center, there just isn't really anything to see. I think Shanghai has a long way to go before it's at the likes of Hong Kong.

Shanghai's downtown is Puxi, aka the highrise ocean.

Yes, but you can't really see any of that from Pudong...
