You can build a small area this way, but not an entire city. It will feel lifeless and empty, even with huge skyscrapers (and in poor area's, which every city has, I don't want to walk trough a park to get to the next skyscraper at night. It works for Luijiazui because it's a rich area.) I prefer Nanjing Road above Luijiazui for walking around. Luijiazui looks pretty from a distance but Nanjing road is much more vibrant and full of life because its denser.

so with hong kong islands skyscrapers - were they all planned in a similar way to pudong's?

i'm not a fan of wide streets and large parks - it seems very unnatural and not very vibrant. i prefer dense, cultural, lively areas such as nanjing road in shanghai, or mong kok/tsim sha tsui in HK.

i really hope somehow that shanghai's pudong district will later fill up with smaller skyscrapers and shops and make their streets smaller. is this possible or is this impossible in terms of construction and stuff?

I agree with your concerns.

But, I think its hard to judge just yet for one without visiting and also without seeing it all finished. Its definitely different concept than nanjing road which is mostly pedestrian. I think with Pudong the emphasis is on parkland, good car transportation but seems walk able.

Plus I see shops and restaurants ocasionally on pictures. Such as the one bellow, seems like a huge restaurant. Remember that IFC will have a mall and also Shanghai tower. You already have the super brands mall. You have restaurants on the bank of the river facing the bund which is within walking distance of all the towers. Lets see once all the construction clears and more towers are finished. One thing is for sure, if anywhere in the world things can change quickly its in China.

Does anybody know what the green round structure in front of the shopping mall is?
Was originally a public square but has been changed to a flagship store. The green roof and grey walls are just to cover up what's inside, should all be removed in June or July.

I think they want to make this part mainly business orientated. Will have to wait for the extension to the Pudong CBD, ie when they start building inwards from the river. Maybe then will there be more smaller buildings closer together and then, maybe pedestrian only lanes for shops and foods.

I agree with the wide roads and all but then again, the Petronas in KL has a similar design, it has a park, supertalls and many buildings built away from the twins but i still found it enjoyable, since there was a large mall with lots of shops food +clothing . But i must admitt, i prefer shopping through market-like areas where there are many shops, not famous branded ones, where you can buy lots of different and local items not found in the more commercial ends like inside a supertall.

I like these two towers. Hopefully Shanghai gets a few more to fill in the cbd.
