Apple likely to open more mainland stores
20 October 2010
SCMP

Apple's handful of branded retail stores on the mainland have become the busiest among its 317 shops worldwide, according to the popular maker of the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

More aggressive retail expansion for Apple on the mainland is expected amid high domestic demand for its new smartphone and media tablet products.

Analysts suggest the long queues that form outside Apple's stores in Beijing and Shanghai, especially during the recent launch of the iPhone 4 and iPad, marked another step forward for the firm in the domestic market, where it has long held a niche position.

"Our four China stores are our highest-traffic stores in the world and are among our highest performing," Apple chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer said during a conference call with analysts yesterday.

"We opened 24 stores during the September quarter, 16 of which were outside the United States, including the spectacular stores in Beijing, Shanghai, London and Paris.

"Our new Beijing and Shanghai stores opened on the last day of the quarter, and first-day sales from both stores exceeded all previous store openings."

Individual shop figures were not provided, but Apple's fiscal quarter to September results showed the firm's worldwide average revenue per store increased 52 per cent year on year to US$11.8 million.

The two newest Apple shops on the mainland are located at the Hong Kong Plaza building in Shanghai and the Joy City mall in Beijing.

Apple's flagship mainland store was established at Beijing's Sanlitun district in July 2008, while its second domestic shop at the IFC Mall in Shanghai's Pudong district was opened in July this year.

In February, Apple senior vice-president Ron Johnson said up to 25 stores would open on the mainland over the next two years.

Oppenheimer buttressed that commitment, noting that Apple would sharpen its focus on international expansion. "In total, we expect to open 40 to 50 stores in our fiscal 2011, with over 50 per cent of them outside the United States," he said.

Charles Guo, analyst at JP Morgan Securities (Asia-Pacific), said in a report: "Apple has turned more aggressive in the past 12 months."

Significant sales momentum on the mainland, where the much sought-after iPhone was formally introduced last year by carrier partner China Unicom, has led Apple to boost the number of its authorised resellers to 2,000 from 1,200.

Apple's revenue on the mainland grew about 200 per cent year on year in the six months to March to US$1.3 billion, or 4.4 per cent of the firm's global turnover in that period, Guo said.

The iPhone's "halo effect" resulted in sharp domestic growth for Apple's Macintosh desktop and laptop computers as it shipped 115,000 units in the second quarter this year, up from 50,000 units in the same period a year earlier. "Apple's brand awareness was elevated after extensive iPhone promotions in the past 12 months," Guo said.

Well, this being China, there are plenty of Apple knock-offs on the market already.

Well, there was a big mainland rush for iPhones in Hong Kong, which launched before China did. Prices in the grey market went up considerably.

Yes - I heard about the customs checks as well back when the latest iPhone was still not launched in China but were available in HK.

There are significant levies on luxury goods in China. Hence, many actually travel to Hong Kong to make their purchases. But then a lot of these stores don't necessarily set up shop there to make money, but rather for visibility purposes.
