MAB to improve air ventilation at KKIA T2
16th June, 2009

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) is currently taking measures to improve the air ventilation in the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) Terminal 2.

This includes to install three units of five horsepower standalone air-condition at strategic places and to install air curtains at the main exit so as to cut down the inflow of warm air from outside the building.

The three standalone units will be installed by next week, if everything goes on smoothly as planned, said MAB Kota Kinabalu manager Mohd Suhaimi Abd Mubin when contacted yesterday for comment on public complaints over the warm condition inside the building of late.

New Sabah Times had been receiving many complaints from Terminal 2 users that it was rather warm inside the building especially in the daytime.

They suspected that the air-condition system was probably not functioning properly.

To this, Suhaimi noted that in fact its centralized air-conditioning system was working perfectly well and that it had been turned to the maximum.

He explained that this was essentially due to the present hot weather which sometimes reaches 36 degree Celsius, besides an “overcapacity” situation.

“Terminal 2 is designed to handle 2 million passengers per annum but last year alone we have reached 2.1million.

“We are fully aware of the situation and we are currently taking measures to address it. We apologise to the passengers for the discomfort experienced during this period of time,” he said.

He also noted that the area that is most affected is near the check-in counters due to its close proximity to the main exit where hot air will normally enter when someone enters or goes out.

The Terminal 2 underwent a massive RM60 million renovation in 2005 and was re-opened on Jan 1, 2007.

KKIA expected to be ready by year-end
Saturday, June 20th, 2009

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu International Airport is expected to be fully completed by the end of this year.

Currently, it is 86 per cent completed, said Chief Inspector-General of Sabah, Datuk Amir Kahar Tun Datu Mustapa after attending the project’s progress briefing by KLIA Consultancy Services Sdn Bhd manager Mohd Fadhil Ramli yesterday.

Amir Kahar said efforts are under way to overcome existing problems affecting the RM1.4 billion KKIA extension works on the 101.89-hectare land.

“Even the economic gloom did not affect the operations that much…for now, we are slightly ahead but we cannot predict that the project would be completed earlier as there are other issues to be considered such as the unpredictable weather,” he said.

Amir Kahar has been given the responsibility to audit and inspect the various projects and developments being undertaken in the state so as to ensure that all are completed on time and on budget.

“In my position, I have been monitoring many projects within Sabah, especially those that have the ability to create outgoing employment and to increase the standard of living and economic opportunities for the people and businesses in the state,” he said.

He said the KKIA project is one of the largest projects undertaken in the state in recent times and incorporates innovative design features with the use of high-tech materials and modern construction methods.

“After my inspection and audit of the KKIA, I have found it as one of the finest projects undertaken within Sabah, and when completed will stand as a major tribute to the efforts and abilities of the people and the state government to undertake and complete major projects successfully,” he said.

The project, he added, stands as solid and concrete testimony of the state government’s on-going commitment to modernise Sabah and its growing infrastructure system while at the same time increasing the state’s social, economic and living standards.

All this, he added, is in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia concept by creating employment and increasing development within Sabah.

“I believe the new KKIA should even now, before its full completion, be promoted extensively in international and domestic markets as the major destination and gateway to Sabah, and all its full attractions that it has to offer, as well as the rest of Borneo Island,” he said.

The successful completion of KKIA would create multiple benefits and opportunities as the increase in tourism, freight and exports would create more jobs outside the airport as well, he added.

Delay in RSTC relocation holding up KKIA expansion
Published on: Saturday, June 20, 2009

Kota Kinabalu: A delay by the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) to move its operations from Tanjung Aru to Tambalang in Tuaran is holding up expansion work on the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).

As a result, completion of the RM1.4 billion project has now been extended to Dec 15. It was originally slated for completion on April 20.

Disclosing this, Inspectorate-General for government projects in Sabah, Datuk Amir Kahar Tun Mustapha, said the problem has delayed work on the airport runway which is being extended from the present 3km to 3.8km at a cost of RM200 million.

He said the RSTC area in Tanjung Aru encompassed the extending of the airport runway and also the building of drains to channel out excessive water on the runway.

"We gave notice to RSTC to relocate their racing operations to Tambalang but it asked for a two-month postponement to do so pending upgrading works on infrastructures in Tambalang.

"However, they have not set a date as to when they would move out from their 4.2-acre site because based on a report that I received, Tambalang has not yet readied the infrastructures for the RSTC relocation."

He said this in a press conference after attending a briefing by KLIA Consult project manager for Package 1, Mohd Fadhil Ramli, on the latest development on the project at the its site office along Jalan Kepayan, here, Friday.

Also present were Department of Civil Aviation Sabah Director Mahmud Amat Shah, his deputy YH Sio, Manager of Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad, Kota Kinabalu, Mohd Suhaimi Abdul Mubin, and officials from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).

Amir said he would be visiting Tambalang to see for himself progress on preparation of infrastructures for the RSTC relocation.

He said the State Government has yet to receive any official claim from RSTC for shifting to Tambalang but assured it would address the issue to enable the KKIA project to be completed as scheduled.

According to him, the directive to vacate the present RSTC Club area was actually made in the 1980s.

However, Tambalang was not found suitable by punters due to the distance and races were moved back to Tanjung Aru, with the permission of the then State Government.

Other problems delaying the KKIA project, Amir said, involve infrastructure matters that are currently being addressed by the concerned quarters.

He said overall the project covering total acreage of 101.89ha is 86 per cent complete.

Sabah turf club to move to make way for airport
Saturday June 20, 2009

KOTA KINABALU: The 100-year-old Sabah Turf Club in Tanjung Aru is being asked to move and make way for the expansion of the Kota Kinabalu international airport runway.

State Project Accounts Committee chairman Datuk Amir Kahar Tun Mustapha said the expansion of the runway from 3km to 3.8km was being held back by the presence of turf club where weekly pony races had been staged since its founding in 1898.

The 4.2ha site occupied by the club is the most suitable location for the runway expansion, Amir Kahar said after touring the RM200mil project site yesterday.

He said the runway expansion that was part of the RM1.4bil upgrading of the airport was about 86% completed.

“The delay is in the runway expansion works.

“We hope the whole thing could be completed by year end,” he said.

Amir Kahar added that the government would compensate the club for it to be relocated.

The Sabah Turf Club’s activities were briefly relocated to Tambalang in Tuaran, about 30km from the city, in the 1980s.

However, the pony races were subsequently moved back to Tanjung Aru following complaints of poor response.
