By RUBEN SARIO. Tuesday November 16, 2010

Here’s to smooth flying: Musa (right) shaking hands with Munir to
commemorate the inauguration of the MAS Eastern Hub and the arrival of
new aircraft MAS B737-800 at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport

KOTA KINABALU: National flag carrier Malaysia Airlines’ first domestic hub at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) is now operational with the maiden arrival of the company’s latest aircraft, the Boeing 737-800.

After a brief stopover, the aircraft departed for Haneda, Tokyo representing the first flight from its eastern hub which MAS chairman Tan Sri Munir Majid projected could add as much as RM100m a year to the company’s bottomline.

“This new service provides us the opportunity to grow and expand to new destinations, adding to the rapidly developing opportunities in commerce and tourism in Sabah,” he said after the launching of the MAS Eastern Hub by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman at KKIA here.

Also present was MAS managing director Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin.

Munir said the MAS Eastern Hub would be developed in three stages from now until June 3 next year and by then the airline would have stationed its two new Boeing 737-800 and the older Boeing 737-400 aircraft as well as 150 pilots and 250 cabin crew here.

From the KKIA hub, MAS would also be operating flights to Haneda, Seoul, Osaka, Kaohsiung, Taipei and Perth.

Munir noted that Sabah was a key desination for MAS, demonstrated by an average growth in passenger numbers over the past two years, with some 1.8 million passengers flying between the peninsula and the state during that period.

He said the inauguration of the KKIA Eastern Hub would also see MAS increasing the number of flights between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from the the current 14 to 25 weekly.

Earlier, Musa said the setting up of the eastern hub at the KKIA augured well for the state’s goal of attracting 4.5 million tourists annually by 2020 from the current 2.36 million.

He said tourist arrivals to Sabah had increased at a rate of 20% a year over the past 10 years.

During the first half of 2010, tourist arrivals totalled 1.083 million, a 5.2% increase compared to the same period in 2008.

He said last year Sabah had 2.246 million visitors who spent nearly RM3.9bil.

Increase direct flights to boost tourism
Thursday November 25, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...sec=southneast

KOTA KINABALU: More airlines will be invited to operate direct flights, including chartered, to help increase tourist arrivals to Sabah.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said this is important as over 90% of tourists to Sabah arrive via air.

The state has 112 direct flights weekly to 12 international destinations namely: Brunei, Hong Kong, Shenzen, Jakarta, Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore, Seoul, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Manila and Clark (Philippines).

“We received 28 chartered flights from January until October. My ministry will add more tourist destinations in Sabah,” he said in reply to a question by Datuk Liew Teck Chan in the state assembly here.

Masidi was confident the weekly flights would be increased from 112 to 121 by June 2011 in line with Kota Kinabalu’s status as Malaysia Airlines eastern hub.

He said Sabah Tourism Promotion Board would participate in 60 sales promotions, exhibitions and seminars at home and abroad next year.

Some 414,783 tourists visited Sabah from January to September compared to the corresponding period last year. – Bernama.

Kota Kinabalu-Perth Route To Boost Tourist Arrivals To Sabah
January 16, 2011 15:47 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines' newly-launched Kota Kinabalu-Perth route is expected to boost tourist arrivals to Sabah in line with the airline's commitment to develop Kota Kinabalu as its eastern hub.

The Australian city is the second international destination introduced after Haneda (Tokyo) in November, since the airlines launched its eastern hub last October.

The national carrier mounted the inaugural flight to Perth yesterday at 7pm, and the return flight to Kota Kinabalu arrived at 7.55am today.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, who was among the passengers arriving on the return flight, told reporters at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) that the new route was a very important milestone to promote the country's tourism, especially in Sabah.

He said Sabahans were among the largest group of foreign communities in Perth, estimated to be around 20,000 people, and that the new route would cater to them as well as Australians coming to Sabah.

"Malaysian students are the third largest group in terms of foreign students in Perth, although we don't have the exact figure.

"So I hoped all parties, not just tourism players in Sabah, will work together to promote this new route and ensure there is sufficient (passenger) load to justify the continuation of the new sector," he said.

He said in the past, the Kota Kinabalu-Sydney route offered by Australia's national airline, Qantas Airways, was discontinued due to low passenger load.

Malaysia Airlines chairman Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid said the passenger load averaged at 86 per cent for both the inaugural flights, where the flight out to Perth carried 119 passengers and the return flight carried 155 passengers on its 160-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

He said the service offers thrice weekly non-stop flights and complements the current 10 non-stop flights from Kuala Lumpur to Perth.

Asked whether Malaysia Airlines was considering other routes from Kota Kinabalu, Dr Munir said for now the priority was to work on the existing routes to ensure high passenger load.

"If that improves, the next step would be increasing the frequency of the flights. Obviously we will look at introducing other routes ... but before we go to the next stage, we want to make sure the routes we are doing now, work," he said.

Malaysia Airlines managing director cum chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz added that besides Haneda and Perth, the airlines was already providing several international routes direct from Kota Kinabalu such as to Osaka, Seoul, Hong Kong and Taipei.
