AIR ASIA WILL MOVE TO TERMINAL 1
KOTA KINABALU: The government has stuck to its decision to shift the operation of Air Asia to Kota Kinabalu International (KKIA) Airport or Terminal 1. Deputy Transportation Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin however said that his office is still open to negotiations with the company concerned before making a final decision. “As far as possible, we want them to shift their operation but because of their needs, they don’t want to do so. We from time to time will discuss with them,” said Lajim at a press conference after launching the School Warden Traffic Program at SK St. Agnes in Likas yesterday. Prior to this, Lajim had proposed the operation of Air Asia to shift to Terminal 1 to overcome the traffic congestion problem at the LCCT. However Lajim’s suggestion to shift the operation after the upgrading project at KKIA scheduled to be completed in May next year, were opposed by Air Asia. According to Lajim among the reasons why Air Asia opposed to the suggestion is the additional cost needed on rental of aprons for parking planes which is RM85 per hour and that will affect the concept of Air Asia’s low cost fare. Meanwhile, when asked whether there is any delay on the upgrading of Terminal 1, KKIA, Lajim did not deny the possibility. He said the reason is due to several changes in the design as requested by the state government. “We asked for a few changes on design and plan, and the federal government has changed a few scopes but the state government does not agree…we will negotiate on this and it might be late,” said Lajim referring to the completion of the project. The School Warden Traffic Program is a community-based program involving all levels of society starting with school students, parents, Parents and Teachers Association, schools, Non-Government Association, the corporate sector, state and federal departments. It is a prevention program to reduce accidents among pedestrians especially students where statistics showed that from January to May 2008, a total of 291 deaths were recorded throughout the country. In the year 2007, a total of 263 deaths were recorded and 28 cases in 2008. Among those present with Lajim yesterday were Director of Sabah Road Safety Department Herdianshah Abdul Karim and Kota Kinabalu Education Officer Dr. Kassim Mohd. Ibrahim. |
