Hamilton surely looks a lot better from inside than outside...

The worst views of Hamilton are from the QEW on the skyway bridge, and that's the view most people have. You also have to drive through the worst neighbourhoods in the city to get from the QEW to downtown.

Flar, you are rapidly becoming one of my favourite photogs here... I like Hamilton and love the fact you can jump on a GO bus and be in a completely different city in 25 minutes!

So many amazing pictures in this thread. The one from inside the condo with the downtown view is probably my favorite.

Looks like my place only with a LOT more character.

I would say (from an Australian perspective) somehwhere like Halifax or Hamilton. As a child (I was an Atlas addict) I pictured them as towns.

I would say four cities in Canada make the radar (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary). A common reply to "what is the capital of Canada" here is "Ontario."
When I got interested in these topics, I was suprised by Toronto's size-- especially the CN Tower- I had honestly never heard of it/ or got it mixed up in my mind looking like the Space Needle and being in Vancouver (don't kill me guys!!) Vancouver tends to get higher publicity in Australia because of its Pacific-location and the general Australian obsession with Whistler.

hmmmm...
"The reason no one ever hears about it is because it's right beside Toronto. As well, it's always been a very blue collar city with very few 'big' things of note internationally. It did quite bad in the last decade or so because many of the manufacturing jobs left the city, and there's a good huge chunk of it which is pretty run down and boarded up (about 2km from the downtown). It is making a slow comeback though it seems, as Toronto is filling up, and people are realizing that the low cost of living (but not suburban) in Hamilton and the relative ease of travel to Toronto makes it an ideal place to commute from."

Sounds like Newark and Jersey City. I like Hamilton even though I was arrested there.

They finally caught up to you, right?

One disadvantage of being so close to a much bigger city is it can suck the life out of the Arts scene.. people do tend to just jump in the car and drive to Toronto for things that in a similarly sized city like Winnipeg they would be more independent. I am hopeful that Flar will post some pictures of Dundurn Castle, which is my favourite residence in Canada, and built by a great great grandfather of Camilla Parker (or so I heard).

So it's near Toronto?

I thought it looked like a mini-Toronto.

Hamilton actually has a good arts scene, several theatres, and excellent orchestra, thriving independent music scene and an arts district on James North. Many artists are moving here from Toronto because it's more affordable yet still urban.

I'll take some nice pictures of Dundurn Castle in the spring. That's a corner of Hamilton I haven't covered much.

@Helium: just point your camera at people and shoot, if there are lots of people on the street no one will care.

Spring is absolutely the best time to photograph it... there is a big, old apple orchard behind the house which would make for spectacular pictures when in blossom! The tour is very interesting, as well.

I would say Niagara Falls, Quebec City or Ottawa are more well known than Calgary.

Ironically I knew about Flin Flon before I knew of Edmonton.
