I'm not sure which one you guys are refering to. Is it the nearly completed section of divded highway where the traffic is still 2-lanes awaiting the opening of the other half?

That section is divided due to a high accident rate on that stretch. It's due to be bypassed by a new motorway that will cut over the hills (north of Wellington) avoiding the coast route which is the main northern route at this time.

Not starting construction until at least 2011 and thats if they get the funding sorted. . If only they hadn't spent so much time going bitch bitch bitch about it. There are documents talking about "early construction start" by 2001. TGM could have been built several times over since the bitching started. Hopeless pathetic government.

To pay for this motorway (even though the idiots still havent worked out funding) they deferred the northern expressway for 20 years. Its ridiculous. You will be able to get to and from the kapiti coast but not beyond the towns that are there. The only parts not deferred are an underpass and one interchange which will still only be one lane each way. This was supposed to be the governments "we're not going to neglect our infrastructure" but its still not good enough. All this stuff was planned back in 1966, and was supposed to be finished by 1986. Over the past 20 years instead of progress its been nothing but bitch bitch bitch about whether to build TGM or upgrade the coastal route to motorway. Thats enough time to have actually built the entire wellington regions state highway network to motorway standard, but all we get is bitch bitch bitch funding this that blah blah blah lets do some more reports and useless paperwork, then how about another study.

Yeah this one. Maybe they would allow you to be able to pass on the shoulder?

The shoulder is for emergency stopping only.

Just a little something to add:

The new overbridge on the Napier-Hastings expressway in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. This picture is about 2 months old so this bridge is nearly complete. The interchange replaces traffic lights at Hawke's Bays busiest intersection, I can't imagine how many vehicles go through it a day.

The design is as follows:

It used to have some passing lanes but they were removed for safety reasons.

How old is the first section of the Napier-Hastings Expressway?

Is it eventually going to bypass Hastings altogether?

1). Will there ever be a bridge or tunnel to connect North and South Island?

2). I know that sheep are pretty docile, but are they just dumb animals too?

1. Not in our lifetime. Way too complex and expensive. Should such a project be undertaken it would probably cost in exess of $50 billion to build. There is currently no crossing anywhere in the world (bridge or tunnel) that can compare with a Cook Strait crossing in terms of complexity.

2. Yes and yes

Is there sufficient travel demand for a fixed link between the two islands? I would imagine not. Existing air and ferry services are probably able to meet the demand, and can be increased if need be.
