Most of Aucklands motorway system has pretty a good surface to drive on, however there are exceptions like the Newmarket Viaduct.....holy shit last time I drove accross that it literally felt like driving on loose gravel!!
But most of the journey through Auckland is very smooth. As for the maintenance of state highways outside Auckland from what I have seen(upper North Island), it varies very much even inside specific regions.I would have to say the best state Highways I have seen in NZ would be in the Rotorua/Taupo area, even the less important roads like highway 38 between Rotorua and Murupara are far better than state highway 1 between Orewa and Whanagrei or even state highway 2 between Auckland and Tauranga. |

The grass looks dry in that pic but if you were on ground level it would probably be green all around.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is the Bombays behind that long straight section of road.

first section was built in the 1960's. And it already pretty much bypasses Hastings now :o

Yes, the first section was through Napier. Specifically, the section running south from Taradale Rd to Meeanee Rd and over the river to Pakowhai Rd.
This bit of road was known the Napier-Hastings Motorway for years even though it was only a two lane highway with traffic light controlled intersections. |

Video of driving into wellington on SH1 (not my video). You might notice the "motorway ends" sign near the start of the video. The section down the gorge isn't motorway, it hasn't had it's classification changed since the interchange was built to replace traffic lights. Probably because it still allows cyclists/pedestrians. Motorway starts again after the gorge.
