Here's another 1959 aerial photograph. This showns the southernmost point of the Southern Motorway, at Wiri Station Road.

In 1959 that would have really been out in the wops. About halfway between the towns of Papatoetoe and Manurewa. And these days it's like the centre of Manukau City.

A project to upgrade part of SH2 in Wellington is currently under construction. Heres a video that explains it much better than I could. http://www.transit.govt.nz/projects/...deos/index.jsp

I love the nice trees in between the lanes. Great way of diffusing noise and sucking up carbon emitted by the cars. The roads look like they're of a great standard too. Are they new by any chance? Or does NZ just have nicer motorways than its big brother to the west?

![]() The CMJ was given a massive makeover back in 2004-early 2007. What you are seeing was re-sealed or newly completed about 2 years ago so it's still looking pretty fresh. |

Auckland has quite an impressive motorway network (judging by photos posted on earlier pages). I'm impressed to see that even Wellington has a motorway (I can't think of many Aussie cities with a population under a million that have any - not even Canberra has a real one and it barely has any public transport either, just private cars).
Is the NZ rate of car dependency higher than Australia's? The CMJ is really bloody impressive.

It's about the same. Australia's per capita car ownership roughly the same as in NZ.
Nearly all cities of significance in NZ have motorways (although these are often very short in provincial centres) but there are as yet no long distance motorways (the Waikato expressway which is 50% complete being the only example at the moment of 4-lane divided expressway running between urban areas). The longest you can drive on continuous motorway/expressway in NZ is from Orewa to Meremere which is 100km in length. |

I'm sure car use is similar between the two though and car ownership is definitely the same as Kaas says.

What's on the motorway building agenda in NZ for the next ten years?
Alternatively, any major public transport projects on the agenda in the same period? |

- Auckland's South Western, North Western and Upper Harbour Motorways are all to be extended to provide a western ring road of Auckland. - The Northern Motorway in Auckland is to be extended to Puhoi. - SH1 through the Porirua area is to be bypassed with a motorway to the east, from the Johnsonville Porirua Motorway near Linden to meet SH1 just north of Paekakariki. - The Victoria Park viaduct in Auckland is going to become southbound only, while a tunnel is built for northbound traffic. This is being done because the viaduct is too narrow for today's traffic volumes. - If the government gets its act together, we may see a second Auckland harbour crossing within the next decade or so. - A motorway is being planned to connect Auckland more directly with Whangaparaoa, to avoid the need to travel via Silverdale. - It probably won't happen, but we can always hope that something will be done about the lack of a second Terrace Tunnel in Wellington and the new "inner city bypass" consisting of several one-way streets. ![]() I've probably forgotten a few, though. |

Amazing highways especially considering Auckland's population. Vancouver only has one highway that is wider than 4 lanes and none that go even close to the city.
