But here we can see another big one u/c.

when I first saw this, I immediately thought of Tatooine from 'Star Wars'!

Oh My.

What a waste of money, resources, and brain power. Surely humanity can do better than build monuments to some mythical deity?

At least add a little color?

Don't want to turn this into another topic, but a mosque of this magnitude is not built for the sake of art. Look at the political message behind it in hindsight of the sectarian division and battles within Iraq. Then you will understand why it is being built probably before schools and hospitals and others.

BTW why doesn't those that destroyed Iraq build schools and other needed facilities. Baghdad gets less water than it used to in the times of Saddam.

I would argue that religious commissioning has created many of the greatest works of art and architecture ever... no matter what the underlying motive was. That being said, it's a shame that religion in the end, just causes wars. People just want stability. If there is a separation of church and state and people are free to choose their religion, only then can people truly work together to advance society. Humanity is much more important than any single religious theory.

If you do believe that there is a god do you believe the world that we live in, with waring factions of religious zealots, is what he had in mind for us?

Very interesting architecture. I hope that someday it can be made into an incredible public university.

Agreed. The whole region is in a lot of difficulty and they're wasting money and oversized mosque. Sure it looks pretty, but that's not a good reason to build something of this calibre.

I don't exactly get what you're trying to say here. Are you saying that this mosque would bring the different divisions of Islam together? Because only the opposite is true. When two sects of a religion are at war, stroking their beliefs only increases the fighting. It isn't like they're going to walk into that mosque to learn how to get along.
