Question: Does anyone know whether Albania will be (or perhaps already is) included in the E road system?

In 2006 Albania joined the E-road cooperation. The following european routes pass through the country:
  • E86: Korēa - Florina - Thessaloniki
  • E762: Sarajevo - Nikšić - Podgorica - Tuzi - Shkodėr
  • E851: Dubrovnik - Bar - Ulcinj - Shkodėr - Prishtina
  • E852: Tirana - Elbasan - Struga - Ohrid
  • E853: Saranda - Ioannina

Yes there is. In adittion to the sea traffic, we have air links with 14 different cities in Italy.

italy and albania are extensively connected via air and ferry service, the only possible way we can extend our connections with them is if we were to build a tunnel under the adriatic.

nice to see that they're building new highways in Albania..it seems to be a really beautiful country, and if it could(and surely will have in the future) better infrastructure it could become a really popular tourist destination like Croatia since it offers everything from beaches to mountains and beautiful historic cities.

Of course it's true! Just some keywords: Castle and old town of Berat/Gjirokaster/Voskopoja, Butrint; Castle of Shkodra, Lezhe, Kruja, Pogradec etc; Apollonia, Byllis.

There are so many historical cities in Albania, that i can't count and remember all at the moment.

Yes. I can confirm that there are few awesome historic cities. I was there for the vacation last summer and especially Gjirokaster amazed me. But road infrastructure is horrible there...Adriatic panorama road is nightmare. It's like rural road.

^ I hope whole sections are like that. When I was small, I got very close to Albania once in Montenegro (some 10 km or so). In those times it would be a pain in the ass to drive to Tirana (or even just Shkodėr), I've heard you weren't even allowed to drive in Albania, instead you had to call a taxi to the border crossing. And getting visa for Albania wasn't a piece of cake either.

Yes...some roads were realy nice (eg. Shkoder-Tirane, Duress-Tirana or Durres - Rrhogozine - Tepelene - Gjirokaster - Greek borders) Realy bad were roads Podgorica(MTN)-Shkoder, Vlore-Sarande and Sarande-Himare(coastal road). But I hope in few years they will repair the rest and become great touristic destination.
And one observation: Albania is country of MERCEDESES!

It's a good thing there is a coastal road into Montenegro, viamichelin doesn't show it. But what about one from Butrint to Igoumenitsa in Greece?

From Igoumenitsa via Ioannina, take the E90 road. At Kalpata turn left onto the E853 and continue to the border, at Kakavia. Here you must pass through Greek customs and Albanian passport control .

From Kakavia follow the road north (SH4), towards Gjirokastra. After approximately 10 km, just after the village of Jergucati, turn left and follow this road over the mountains ahead to Saranda and Butrint.

SH4 - between Albanian-Greek border an Gjirokaster
It's a very fast highway with entrances and exists like a motorway => There are no road-crossings on this part of the SH4

Jergucat-Sarande
It's a road through the mountains, but in a very good condition. I've past in June 2007 this road.
