SA's highways are easily the best in Africa, this along with airports and rail system should help SA leap into the "first world" and effectively compete with the larger economies in Europe and US

We just need to sort out the freaking crime and get the whole Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action programs working properly to accelerate investments, wealth generation and narrow income inequality. And if our president could fire some ministers for something called INCOMPETENCE. Top on my list of Ministers that should have long been showed the door are the ministers of Safety and Security, Health, Communications, Home Affairs and Housing

Tanzania has some very nice roads. I think they have the second best highways in East Africa, second only to Rwanda which has the best highways in the region.

Wow, so the Rwanda guys really mean business. I have always thought that Paul Kigame is one guy that really has a mission. Wish we could get some pictures and see the roads. I heard they are laying a lot of fiber rings to cover the whole country in order to boost broadband internet access.

I believe that Nigeria is moving in the right direction. I saw on the news that The new Minister for Transport has outlined roads that will be reconstructed. He is about to begin a nationwide tour to have a comprehensive understanding of the problem, before going back to the drawing board. I think that 16 years of military rule has really messed up things for Nigeria

Yeah, right now the guys just need to start building infrastructure like crazy everywhere to bring Nigeria up to speed. Especially with the oil windfall coming from the rising oil prices. They really need to do what Angola is doing with its oil money. Less talk and more action is what is needed for Nigeria.

Kulani, please, donīt forget that Nigeria has built up a lot of infrastructure in the 70īs and early 80īs. Abuja has mostly been built from the mid 90īs onwards....and more new roads have been built since 1999. Nigeria has the best infrastructure (number of highways, flyovers, number of airports, kilometres of road network etc.) outside of South Africa in sub-saharan Africa. But I perfectly agree with you that more needs to be done. A cheque of $30 billion for more road and highway construction could help a lot!

Yes, you are right that Nigeria right now needs to be very ambitious to really close the gap. A $30 billion check would not hurt and would immediately signal that Yar'Ardua is serious about tackling this. South Africa is currently spending roughly $12 billion on rail transport, $10 billion on roads and $5 billion on airports and $20 billion on electricity.

I stand corrected but isn't the Nigerian government making $3 billion or more in oil exports per month? So money to finance this should not be a problem at all.

I am not sure Nigeria has the second best infrastructure in sub saharan Africa, I think that if you look at population and number of roads Namibia, Tanzania and even Kenya are on par or better than Nigeria. Kenyan Airports are some of the best in Africa and the rail network is also changing for the better. A Nigerian friend who visited Nairobi told me that he found Nairobi to be much better than Lagos because of better roads and a much better in city transport network.

Kenya and Tanzania have a Better Transportation Infrastructure than Nigeria, in the sense that roads in those two countries are better maintained.

However when looking at it from a "Infrastructure in place" point of view Nigeria has a better Transportation Infrastructure.

The Longest Bridge in Africa is in Nigeria.

If you go to Lagos, there are more Flyovers and Ring Roads than in Nairobi. At least from what I have seen of Nairobi. However when Nigerians say Nairobi is better than Lagos, it is all to do with Maintenance. I mean when all the Flyovers and Highways were completed in the 70s, they were World Class, on par with those of any other country in Africa. However Nigeria's Greatest Downfall Infrastructure wise is Maintenance.

A lot of the roads in Nigeria are in a deplorable state, however a lot of Transportation Infrastructure are still in Place. The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is still "Africa's Bridge". The Murtala Mohammad International Airport is still a very important airport in Africa, and the roads in Abuja are one of the best maintained on the continent.

Looking at a none Biased point of view, Kenya has a better Transportation Infrastructure. Roads in Nairobi, are cleaner than those in Lagos, There are less Port Holes etc. However Nigeria has a less Uphill struggle in terms of putting the Infrastructure in place. Our problem is Maintenance.

Hahahahaha, it gave me a good laugh and nothing more.

Nigeria has the second best infrastructure in Africa beyond any doubt.
Comparing Namibia to Nigeria is simply ridiculous, once you leave Swakopmund and Windhoek you have just one single road leading to nowhere, partly it is even sand and dirt road!

In Lagos and Abuja (give me any city outside of South Africa ) that has the same standard of infrastructure like Abuja. There is none. The next closest is still Abidjan.

The number of flyovers, the number of bridges, the number of airports (all that has be paid with petro-money and not with exporting bananas and peanuts) many towns in Nigeria have tarred roads even smaller ones, There are more than 2000 km of highways in naia. I donīt say our infratsructure is good - far from it - but it is there, we donīt have to start from scratch which is still the case for the majority of African countries.

As for your Nigerian friend, you should keep in mind that Naija people love to complain a lot and always say that things are greener on the other pasture...this doesnīt mean it it really this way.
