Really fantastic, spectacular. Based on these photos I can comfortably say that I prefer this district to some of the others shown recently.

That's quite fair...walk in parisian streets and you see many unhappy faces, as if people were forced to live there or endure a hard life. That is not as common in provincial cities.

Yes, compared to many cities, Paris (city-proper) lacks colors. Beige is the dominant color and I read somewhere that there is somewhat of a bourgeois taste to its history that established that a neutral dominant color was elegant and of "good taste." However, it's very likely that such taste was inherited from earlier, pre-bourgeois, aristocratic French tradition for that same monotone setting. Not to mention that "Haussmannian" architecture imposed strict architectural and dimensional guidelines.
You will notice that bourgeois Bordeaux (some unfairly nickname it "Boring"), the "quintessential French city" besides Paris (what Seville is to Spain), strongly exemplifies this as well, with similar monotone colors in its largely preserved 18th c. historic center, thus pre-French Revolution, thus where a lot of the aristocracy lived). Many other French cities lack colors, too, however, there are some French cities which have more color, as is Toulouse (although Pink tones dominate), Lyon (but earthy pastel colors dominate there). When you get near the border of other European countries, French cities take on some of their influence, thus you see more colors in Lille (near Belgium), Strasbourg and Colmar (near Germany), and Nice (near Italy). What I can tell you is that when the sun hits the beige-like buildings of Paris, they take on a golden glow that is really majestic--I think it's when the sun starts to go down, and I've never seen this elsewhere. |
