Arrow WALLERFIELD | University of Trinidad & Tobago | Wallerfield Campus | U/C

Just sharing this article (that i found very interesting) with all of you.

Acla :Works

The academic environment, a primer Civilizations of old have always pursued knowledge. From its inception, academic environments have ultimately signified the pursuit of erudition for the betterment of mankind. Today these ideals remain, and as such academic environments endure as our most potent realm for academic, personal, professional and cultural development. Without the secular or monastic seclusion of monasteries, they embrace ideals of order and freedom of intellectual pursuits. Consequently, university campuses are singularly the preeminent construct for the promotion and sustenance of the human condition.

The masterplan, context The UTT's Tamana Campus is located at the northeastern quadrant of the Tamana Inteck Park and is one of a series of academic, research and industrial grade components which constitute the larger TIP. Located on the former Wallerfield Estate in North Central Trinidad , the TIP is conceived as a State-of-The-Art academic and research environment for the 21st Century -with local and regional significance. Hand in hand with this objective is a commitment to best practice and sustainability in the design, construction and operation of this facility.

Masterplan design objective The objective of the UTT masterplan is to create a contextually sensitive academic experience while providing a framework for future systemic development. From the inception of the masterplanning exercise, there were a number of ideas about how the site may be organized and what elements of the existing context may be engaged and what might be allowed to recede into the landscape. This process lead to the testing of various armatures spatial concepts / constructs which eventually produced the “Hinge” concept as a point of departure for structuring the masterplan.

The Hinge The Masterplan's framework or “Hinge” concept was derived through the use of the site as a multi –tiered metaphor. At the fundamental level, the physical manifestation of the plan represents a union of old and new and of past and future. As a means of establishing lineage and relevance, the new masterplan engages the existing road network while introducing a new dimension of programming and improved circulation to the site. In this new configuration, the new “diagonal” network is intended primarily for core university functions, whereas the existing North - South Grid is intended primarily for research based activities. These two activities are organized around a quadrangle that eventually converges at the center of the campus.

The UTT central campus precinct As a further elaboration of the global developmental construct, the precinct is organized around a three tiered elevated plaza. These three tiers or plateaus are intended to demarcate the three stages of formal education - primary secondary and tertiary, with the last component culminating in the university's graduation space. From this plateau one is afforded spectacular views of the campus and the Central Range beyond. While the metaphor of “educate to elevate” has aided in the structuring of the university's main civic space it also serves as a measure to mitigate the possibility of flooding by rising above the site's flood plain which is reported to be at 1 meter above grade. At 5 meters above grade, the undercroft created by this elevated plaza allows ample space for mechanical equipment, service, storage and parking. In addition, this feature eliminates the need for excessive external service activity while effectively masking vehicles that may be parked at central campus.

That's a good question. Maybe someone from TT can answer that for us.
