Interesting, did not hear anything about it here. I know there is a Chengdu-Pujiang being built. The local authorities seem to keep fairly silent about such things and we often only know *after* it's opened that something has happened.

Baike has this to say:

  成雅铁路建设,将有利于我省加快构建现代综合交通运输体系,进一步发挥川西重镇雅安“东联成都、西进康藏、南下攀西”的重要枢纽作用,对加快推动芦山地震灾后恢复重建、促进灾区发展振兴;加强区域经济协调发展、促进成都与雅安经济社会广泛往来及人员密切交流;同时,对辐射藏区带动民族地区经济社会发展、增进民族和谐交融、维护民族安定团结等都具有十分重要的战略意义。
This says the line is called "Chengdu-Ya'an Intercity Railway," it is 42km long and they are spending 4.165 billion rmb (~650-700 million USD) on it. Design speed is 160kph and it will take about 3.5 years to finish (mid 2018). Plans call for 65 passenger trains a day and 15 million tons of freight a year.

The rest is fancy talk about improving the community and local; also to aid in reconstructing after the earthquake Ya'an had last year. This sounds like what they said when the 2008 struck - the Chengguan Intercity sprung up in a similar time frame.

Construction begins on Lhasa - Nyingchi line
Friday, December 19, 2014

CHINA Railway Corporation confirmed on December 19 that construction has begun on a 402km line linking Lhasa in Tibet with Nyingchi, close to the disputed Indian border region of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as part of Tibet

The total budget for the project is Yuan 36.6bn ($US 6bn) and construction is due to be completed by 2021.

In August China inaugurated the second phase of Tibet's railway network, the 253km line from Lhasa to Xigaze

It's a connecting corridor linking Beijing Station and Beijing West, right underneath downtown Beijing.

But weren't they going to "move" the Beijing West operations to a different station?

Ok, I looked it up again and found the following:

"There are, however, plans to construct a new major railway terminal (the new Fengtai Railway Station) in the southwestern part of Beijing, and to eventually make it the terminal for the high-speed trains on the Beijing-Guangzhou line."

So, what does making Fengtai a new major HSR terminal do for this Beijing West-Beijing tunnel? What will the tunnel be used for?

Thanks, guys.

Lines keep opening up that I never knew were under construction. Is this part of the Zhengzhou-Xuzhou High Speed Railway?

I never said that. I asked what the tunnel will be used for once Fengtai is built.

RMB 50bn for 50km? Isn't that a little expensive compared to other lines?
