China-Belarus cargo route begins service
Excerpt

LANZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Workers are performing final checks on the chassis and railcars of a train that will depart next week from Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, to Minsk in the Republic of Belarus.

The trip will mark the second chartered service via the 7,000 km rail line after cargo service began on September 23. The direct link connects the logistics hub of Lanzhou and the China-Belarus Industrial Park, which is under construction in Minsk.

The train service will become regular once the industrial park opens.

Statistics from the Gansu provincial government showed that 63 cargo trains made trips from Lanzhou to Europe and Central Asia during the first nine months of 2016, with goods totaling 108.463 million U.S. dollars in value. The goods for export include building materials, machinery equipment, home furnishings and drilling rig accessories.

China Daily and Xinhua Excerpt
Nov. 15, 2016

The top economic planner has approved five railway projects with a total investment of close to 200 billion yuan ($29.23 billion) so far this month, China Business News reported.

The Ganshen railway, with a total investment of 64.13 billion yuan, connects Ganzhou city of Jiangxi province and Shenzhen city of Guangdong province. The project, with a total length of 432 kilometers and 14 stations, is expected to complete in 2020.

The National Development and Reform Commission also approved the Beijing-Tangshan intercity railway, a key part of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei intercity rail transit network. The 148.7-kilometer rail link has a total investment of 44.9 billion yuan.

Meanwhile, another three approved projects, Zhangjiajie-Jishou-Huaihua railway, Mudanjiang-Jiamusi railway and a new freight rail line, Shenmu North (Hongliulin) - Fengjiachun section of the Shenwa railway, involved an investment of 38.24 billion yuan, 38.56 billion yuan and 8.75 billion yuan respectively.

The above-mentioned five rail projects have a total value of 194.58 billion yuan, the newspaper said.

The government has sought ways to increase investment in infrastructure projects in a bid to shore up the economy.

Young designers to the fore
01 Dec 2016

CHINA: In a bid to encourage better design and attract young talent into the rail sector, Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Qingdao Sifang Corp sponsored an international design competition alongside the second International Workshop on Rail Vehicle Industrial Design which it hosted in the Chinese port city on November 16-18.

Organised in conjunction with Priestman*Goode, the competition invited young design students to put forward their vision of a railway in 2030. It drew more than 120 entries from 27 countries, with proposals ranging from stylish high speed trains and innovative propulsion systems to futuristic monorails and personal rapid transit concepts. Urban mobility and environmental sustainability featured heavily in the submissions

ChengKun line

The "official" movie documentary of the ChengKun line was done in 1974, and was a bit of a backscratch, the Chinese can do anything. CCTV revisited this in 2006 with interviews of people who were there, newsreel & photos of outside influences. My schoolboy level Chinese language has given me the audacity to put English subtitles on this:

China railways brace for record passengers in upcoming 'Chunyun'
Xinhua Excerpt
10 December 2016

BEIJING -- China's railway system will see a record number of passengers during the upcoming "Chunyun" peak travel period around Spring Festival.

Up to 356 million trips are expected to be made via railways between Jan. 13 and Feb. 21 in the annual migration, up 9.7 percent year on year, according to China Railway Corporation (CRC) Saturday.

CRC said it will add more passenger trains to deal with the extra numbers and simplify ticket purchase procedures to improve services.

Nice shots, I have passed by this yard several times recently but have not been able to see it as clearly as these shots are. I am guessing this yard effectively replaced the yard that was demolished to make way for the new expanded Lanzhou West high speed railway station. I remember wandering around there in the old yard before and during construction took place.

Inter-city high speed rail in C China opens for test run

An inter-city high-speed rail in central China's Hunan Province has opened for test run. The 95.5km-long railway will reduce travel time between Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan to less than half an hour. One third of stations along the line are built underground. It's expected to enter into service before the end of this month.
