SLOVENIA | Railways

Recently, I was on a trip to Ljubljana (sorry, no photos due to a broken camera ). I went there by train for the first time in my life, and it sure was an incredible journey.. an incredible slow journey, that is. It took over TWO HOURS to get from Ljubljana - Maribor (150 km). If I had a car, It would be a travel that takes max. 1h30 mins. I didnt get it why it had to be so slow, it was double tracked and they were also welded.

So, due to my frustration over the Slovenian railway network... are there any plans for upgrading the tracks and other technical standards? Any High-speed railway-projects? Etc.

Oh, btw, those who have, feel free to post photos from the Slovenian rail, maybe their rides are slow but it was such a marvelous landscape that passed through the window. I have to give the Slovenian railway credit for that

Most of Slovenian railways are on very difficult terrain very hilly, big height differences), so their modernization will be very costly. Last autumn Ministry of traffic announced 9 billion worth program of modernization up to year 2023.

Here is Powerpoint presentation of program in Slovenian language
There are maps (dokumentacija in postopki=documentation and procedures; gradnja=construction; odsek=section) and tables with costs in millions of euro.

My opinion is, that this program is quite ambitious, especially because nothing special is happening right now, except reconstructions of some smaller, but important railway stations. Almost all construction forces and financial support are occupied with motorway program up to 2009. Also, this new railway program will cost twice as much as whole motorway program between years 1994 and 2008.

The Slovenian railways have invested in modern rolling stock.

Some pictures I found.

Pendolino, max speed 200 km/h, but it doesn't go faster then 140 km/h because of the infrastructure.

Over 220 km/h but in Slovenia it goes only up to 160 km/h, because we don't have high speed rail. Going faster would be to dangerous (animals, railway crossings, ). In 1994 one Italian Pendolino was on testing drive and the whole rail between Pragersko and Maribor was guarded (about 40 straight km). Italian Pendolino broke old speed rekord and now it is 208 km/h.

It was on testing drive in France (to break the world record). This is Austrian Taurus, world recorder (for electro locomotives) with 357 km/h:

And here we have our SŽ 541-004 (red one between other locomotives). It's a world recorder too :
