Jesenice-Bled-Nova Gorica - diesel only, less traffic. Freight trains S664, OBB2016, passenger S813/814.

For trainspotting is Koper - Divača the best place to visit.
Highest frequency is between Ljubljana and Zidani Most, luckily railway has two tracks.

I have a question for Slovenians (or to anyone else who may know):

I heard there was a recently opened rail connection from Sezana to Villa Opicina in Italy, is this true? That would make it possible to travel by rail from Ljubljana to Trieste as long as you take the Opicina Tramway down into the Trieste city center.

It has been running for some time now. Getting from Ljubljana to Trieste would indeed be possible with the tram, but as far as I know it has had some operational problems and is not running right now (?). However, there are local buses running from Opicina to Trieste.

not really recently, but yes.

trains that operate to Villa Opicina are.
LPV 1802
LPV 1804
LPV 1806
LPV 1808
LPV 1810
LPV 1812

and their pairs in counter direction.

you have to walk 10min tough from railway station to tram station in Opicina (or you can take the shuttle)

And those are direct trains between Ljubljana and Villa Opicina, you don't have to change trains in Sežana.

What? 60 passenger trains per day between Ljubljana and Jesenice? There are a lot less than that: http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/compo...23stationsData

SŽ offer a rather poor passenger service: slow, inconvenient timetables, trains full of graffiti... Not surprisingly Slovenia is utterly car dependent. International rail freight traffic is quite intense and nice to see, though.

Depends on where between Ljubljana and Jesenice as few trains end in Kranj, but even there the number of them in both directions is slightly below 50.

I didn't dislike slovenian railways.. trains where on time.. clean on the inside and dirt-cheap.

Graffiti and the stations might not be great, but the same can be said for a lot of other EU-countries.

Slovenian voters today gave green light to construction of the second rail between Koper and Divača in a referendum.

Btw. Your source says there are plans to build as much as nine new train stops around Ljubljana (wow, I apparently still remember some Slovenian I've once learned as a teenager ). As the full text is inaccessible... do they plan to construct a kind of S-Bahn in the capital city?

Long-term plans exist, but the whole thing is more like wishful thinking. Here is an image from 2008 and after 9 years they only started building railway stops Lj. Dolgi most and Lavrica SE of Ljubljana (which already existed in the past as a full station).

white – existing railway stations
black – existing railway stops
red – new stops (projecting in course)
green – new stops (long-term draft)
blue – *station (projecting in course), **station (long-term draft)
