***Bendigo's Architectural Marvels***
Went for a drive to Bendigo on the weekend as I hadn't been in some time, and took a few happy snaps of probably the best architectural city in the country outside the capitals.

I was in bendigo on the weekend to, but too busy to take any photos. It's such a beautiful city and you've captured it well. I especially love the cathedral in it's imposing position on the hill. Some interesting modern architecture springing up to.

Bendigo's cool, I love it, and also Ballarat. They're almost my favourite inland town/cities. Dont know which is better, Bendigo or Ballarat?

Wow. Going by the pics Bendigo is stunning and easily the most beautiful i've seen for a regional centre.
Great pics!

Bendigo better for 1880s (late Victorian) architecture, Ballarat better for 1850s (mid Victorian) architecture. Both good for everything except water!

Both Bendigo and Ballarat are just sensational and Victoria is so lucky to have both so close to Melbourne.

Hey guys,
I have a place in Bendigo, I'll take some photos as soon as I find my camera. They have now started lighting the Sacred Heart Cathedral up at night - looks fantastic! |

Great shots, some of those buildings wouldn't look out of place in an imperial capital, never mind regional Australia. What about residential architecture- does Bendigo have much in the way of old terrace housing etc?

Found my answer
A CLOCK FOR TOWN HALL AFTER 120 YEARS - 17/2/2005 After nearly 120 years a clock will finally be installed in the historic Bendigo Town Hall tower thanks to the generosity of the Bendigo Advertiser and the Rotary Club of Bendigo. Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr. Rod Fyffe said the $61,500 project will be funded by a $35,000 gift from the Rotary Club of Bendigo to recognise the Centenary of Rotary International, a $20,000 gift from the Bendigo Advertiser to mark the newspapers 150th anniversary in 2004, and a $6,500 contribution from the Council. Cr. Fyffe said the new clock will be a fantastic gift to the city by the Rotary Club of Bendigo and the Bendigo Advertiser which will mark significant milestones for both organisations. “When renowned architect William C. Vahland redesigned the Town Hall in 1878 he made provision for the installation of a clock in the tower but it’s taken until now for the decision to install one to finally happen. “It’s a bit like putting the icing on the cake more than 100 years after it has been baked,” said Cr. Fyffe. “Council is very appreciative that both the Rotary Club of Bendigo and the Bendigo Advertiser were both keen to mark significant anniversaries by providing funding for a project that will stand the test of time. “It will also provide a very useful service for the community and visitors to the city,” said Cr. Fyffe. The project will involve the installation of clock movements within the top section of the Town Hall tower along with four clock faces each being over 2 metres in diameter. The clock faces will be an eggshell colour to respect the integrity of the building. Approval for the installation of the new clock has been gained from Heritage Victoria. |

Having a family affinity to it, I love Sturt St. Ballarat, which is good, but Bendigo certainly manages to lay on the stone and slate in such profundity and close proximity to create quite incredible street-scrapes.
Have to confess the last couple of times I was there I just breezed through on the train. Well done guys. |

Instead of blaming politicians, get a lever on it. How much per head?
The opposition has complained over the past 48 hours that 10 trains ($320 miiliom) aren't enough, we should by getting 65 trains instead ( that's more or less a quote from the opposition Minister for Transport). And then suddenly the mention of 65 trains disappeared. |
