Open Spandrel Concrete Arch Bridges

Many of the most picturesque highway bridges in the United States utilize an open spandrel concrete arch design. This was a popular form of bridge construction during the first half of the last century. Two of the most famous bridges of this type are the Bixby Creek Bridge in the Big Sur area of California and the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena, California:

This form of construction was also used for many more modest highway bridges built before World War II, such as on Route 330 in City Creek Canyon in the San Bernardino Mountains:

All though not the best bridges in the world in terms of size I think Newcastle can claim to have the best collection of Bridges anywhere in the world within a 2 mile stretch with 7 in total.

This picture shows 6 of the seven bridges clearly with the swing bridge hidden between the Tyne Bridge (green one) and the High level bridge (big black one)

Here are the names dates and who they were opened by from top to bottom of the photo.

Millenium Bridge (2001 by Queen Elizabeth II )
Tyne Bridge (1928 by King George V )
Swing bridge (1876 - no official ceremony)
High Level bridge (1849 by Queen Victoria)
Queen Elizabeth II Bridge (1981 by Queen Elizabeth II.)
King Edward VII Bridge (1906 by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra)
The Redheugh Bridge (1983 by Diana, The Princess of Wales)

Here are each of the bridges in more detail.

Millenium Bridge:

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a 600 tonne structure, will slowly open turning on a pivot like a giant eyelid to form an arch to allow ships to pass below it. Significant dates: Bridge manouvred into position by the giant crane Asian Hercules .

The Tyne Bridge:
The most famous of the 7 bridges and the main artery into the City centre of Newcastle from the South

The Swing bridge:

The Swing Bridge was built on the site of the Roman and Medieval bridges which crossed the Tyne at this point. During its construction, two Roman altars were dredged from the river. Dedicated to Neptune and Oceanus, they probably belonged to a shrine built to protect the Roman bridge from the Tyne's tides. The largest opening bridge of its kind when it was opened in 1876, its hydraulic opening action was originally driven by steam pumps but these were replaced with electric pumps in 1959. The bridge was needed because the small arches of the old stone bridge prevented large, sea-going vessels access to Lord Armstrong's expanding Elswick Works.

The High level bridge:

The revolutionary design with trains on the top deck and a road below. It was the first bridge built with both cast and wrought iron. Trains first crossed 15th August 1849 - no ceremony. Road traffic first crossed 4th February 1850. The road deck was strengthened in 1922 to take trams.

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge:

Traffic: Rail (Metro Rapid Transport). Length: 1115 ft 6in (352.7m). Width: 33ft 6in (10.2m).

The King Edward VII Bridge:

Traffic: Motor vehicles & pedestrian. Length: 1304 ft (397.72m). Width: 56ft (17.08m).

The King Edward VII Bridge was the second rail crossing over the Tyne.

The Redheugh Bridge:

Traffic: Motor vehicles & pedestrian. Length: 2942 ft (897m). Width: 52ft (15.8m).

There have been three Redheugh Bridges on this site, dating back to 1871. The current bridge was opened by the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales in 1983.

A few other pics.
The river Tyne in the early morning:

The river Tyne at night:

I think you'll agree they are a great set of bridges and I look forward to seeing them everytime I visit Newcastle.

So sorry. i will be the first to admit that i was very wrong. If i had known it was built the same time i would hav assumed it was the architecture style at the time. Now looking at the pics u posted i think it looks great.

The P. Zakim Leonard Bridge (aka Bunker Hill Bridge), Boston. It is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world at 183 ft with 10 lanes and is supposed to resemble the Bunker Hill Monument.

The Bunker Hill Monument itself:

1. Golden Gate bridge (never driven on it but it sure looks nice)
2. One of the many NY bridges with the great skyline views.
3. The 7-Mile bridge in the Florida Keys. I love the fact that in the middle of the bridge you can't see land on either side on a less than clear day.

The Talmadge Memorial Bridge in Savannah would definitely be in my top five list (possibly cause its the only bridge I've driven over). Nothing beats driving over the bridge at dawn and seeing good old Savannah rise into view.

Bloor Street Viaduct (officially called the "Prince Edward Viaduct")
Built in 1918, designer Edmund Burke insisted on having a lower deck for a future subway line (built 48 years later, saving the TTC millions...)
Even though the bridge is onlty 490 metres long and 40 metres high, it still is my favorite because it has a major roadway on top, a subway line on the lower deck , and it passes over a road, a highway, ariver, a bike path, a major rail line, an electrical transmission line...... as well as the one of largest innercity park systems in canada

Golden Gate - the superlative of all bridges. Take a drive on it, sometime. The Brooklyn Bridge is a close second.

My Thuan Bridge-Vietnam

The My Thuan Bridge, located in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam, was completed in May 2000. Built with Australian assistance, the My Thuan Bridge represents an architectural expression of the friendship and co-operation between the peoples and governments of Vietnam and Australia.
Studies indicate that the bridge will be a major catalyst for an improvement in living conditions for Vietnamese people living in the delta region and also throughout the country.
The 4,500 kilometre long Mekong River is the tenth longest river in the world, flowing through China, Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia from its source region in Tibet to its mouth in Vietnam where it flows into the South China Sea (see figure 2). There are main two branches of the Mekong River in Vietnam, the Tien Giang and the Hau Giang.
The Tien Giang is the main branch of the Mekong River as it flows through Vietnam and it is an international shipping channel used by vessels moving to and from Cambodia.
Australian companies, with support from Vietnamese enterprises, prepared the feasibility study for the project, undertook detailed engineering design for the bridge, acted as lead contractors for construction, and supervised construction performance. Vietnamese companies undertook 45 percent of the construction of the bridge through subcontracts.
National Highway 1, south of Ho Chi Minh City, is the principal road link to the Mekong Delta, with roads diverging to the south, southeast and west of the Mekong Delta from the southern banks of the Tien Giang. The My Thuan Bridge is thus a critical link in the road network in southern Vietnam.

My favourite is the George V Bridge in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

But somedays it's the Fourth Bridge (especially when it's not undergoing renovation).

Went over the Bosporus bridge a few times and it was very impressive. Nice detail: these are the only bridges in the world that connect 2 continents!

My personal favorite is still the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, nicknamed The Swan. Quite modest in size when compared to other bridges, but the design is unique:
