An amalgam of German and Japanese motorways would be...

perfect.

Hokkaido has a reasonable rail system and its main city Sapporo has a metro system too. I went there about two years ago.

But it is true, it is much less densely populated than the rest of Japan and has a quite different atmosphere. It feels much more Western. The countryside felt quite European or North American and Kushiro was rather like I imagined an Arctic Russian city might be.

Loop 1 Osaka

Loop 1, or Route 1 of the Hanshin Expressway system, is probably one of the most interesting expressways in Japan. It runs across elevated viaducts around central Osaka, not rarely in street canyons and with impressive fly-overs in such an urban environment. It is one of the few expressways in the world that operates only one-way.

I like Japanese expressways. I only don't like two things:
1st, they drive on the left. As I said once in the British road thread, driving on left means dictatorship, while driving on the right means democracy (At least for me...)
And 2nd, THEY DIDN'T NUMBERED THEIR EXPRESSWAYS. Is better to remember a number than a name!!!

Urban expressway systems have numbered routes, like the Shuto system of Tokyo, Hanshin system of Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Nagoya system and Fukuoka and Kitakyushu systems.

Yep, it's owned by NHK and seeing as we don't pay TV licence to them, we can't watch it, haha!

THANK YOU castermaild55!!!!

I can. And yes, it's only in Japanese. I get the impression that a lot of the early projects had to do with the Olympics (summer) in Tokyo in the very late 50s or very early 60s (not sure when they were held there).

While highways/motorways in Asia aren't really my are of interest, the evolution of Japan's network is really fascinating. The creative solutions to routing them through densely populated areas is certainly worthy of discussion.

He's Spanish and suffers from serious anti-Gibraltar issues. That sentence is utter nonsense.

I wonder how the road system fared in the wake of today's monster quake. Obviously, if they are impassable, getting aid and emergency sevices is going to be extremely difficult.
