Curious Item on the Road...

While planning my upcoming trip to South Africa, I wanted to look at the Street View of the road from JHB to my hotel in Sandton.

After turning left at the Rivonia Rd exit off the N1, I see this item in the road. It looks like some kind of plastic board with a fire extinguisher locked to it, right in the middle of the lane:

(This is the exact location https://goo.gl/maps/ETKvc)

At the offramp just a couple of hundred meters away are these warning signs:

So, without being hyper-paranoid or an alarmist, was this some kind of device to trigger a carjacking? It seems, by the positioning, like it was deliberately placed there. I would think running over a fire extinguisher would, at the minimum, require the driver to stop.

I hate to be a downer, and I'm really looking forward to some beautiful drives through the country, but this just struck me as extremely odd, and I'm wondering if this is one of those things that I've been warned about...

Could be...I hope so! (It sure landed rather well, though!)

No, it looks like a makeshift emergency triangle. I do think you are being paranoid. I'm a Joburger and it's more of a police state than anything. There's usually a flying squad police car (GTI, S3) parked around major intersections. Just be vigilant and you will be fine. Come and enjoy our fine roads

Wait, that truck in front of this contraption is standing still, with the emergency lights on. It's most definitely a makeshift emergency triangle (square? ) (Unless one want to discuss what happens if someone stops to help.)

You're absolutely right Devo! I didn't think to keep looking down the street...to see that all the traffic, EXCEPT the truck, had moved on.

My friends who left SA in the 90's have cautioned me about everything, and I guess I let a little of that paranoia seep into my mind. I think that most of their advice could be slightly "outdated." Very excited for my drives in SA in October-- the Garden Route looks amazing!

I took a few pics from my recent trip down to Durban, and thought I'd share.

(Forgive me if I upload it wrong, this is my first time sharing photos here)

The start of the trip getting on the the N1 from William Nicol

Getting onto the freeway to start the trip, I love a good Johannesburg skyline at dawn and dusk!

Just before the last major split at the N12/N3 as you leave the Johannesburg ring road

Down in the Free State during a very dry winter

Tourism/Cultural Signage on the highway

The end of the N3TC outside Cedar

Going down Townhill on the N3 just before Pietermaritzburg

Just outside Durban before the final toll, Marriahill

Yeah, totally unsafe. That's why none of us have cars here and the highways you see are just an illusion.

Do you occasionally spot foreign registered cars in ZA, and where are these from?

Yes, mainly from our neighbouring countries; Namibia, Botswana, Zim, Lesotho and Swaziland. But occasionally there are cars with EU plates, mostly the UK.

Are they planning to upgrade and widen the N11 road?

Superb news for those who frequently travel between Gauteng and KZN area

South Africa to upgrade N3 highway stretch

http://constructionreviewonline.com/...ghway-stretch/

South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) has said that the N3 highway stretch between Durban and Johannesburg will be upgraded in the middle of this year 2015. The contract for this project is prized to be around US$35.05m and would take a construction period of 2 years.

According to the Eastern Region design and construction manager for Sanral, Ravi Ronny, works on this new project would include additional lanes between Tweedie and Cedara interchanges located North of Pietermaritzburg. This will be 11km long.

Ronny also noted that the new contract will entail the planning, design, construction and financing of the road project, not forgetting its maintenance. This stretch is important in that it’s South Africa’s principal freight and logistics corridor.

Increased use by passengers and heavy vehicles on this road led to the decision of upgrading it something, and this would help minimize the impact that heavy traffic might have caused in the years to come.

The N3 highway stretch links the Port of Durban and Gauteng, which are South Africa’s Economic hubs.
