Heading to Soweto, the N1/N12 temporarily overlap and then slit into N1 north bound to Pretoria and N12 towards Kimberly

the mountains are mine dumps from ages ago, i believe they are trying to process this
and extract the last bit of gold left in them and do away with them.

Once in Soweto (i am aware that this picture does not show a highway, just wanted to give some perspective)

On the other end of the N12 highway, you head towards OR Tambo international airport (formerly Johannesburg international airport) and Witbank.

Really? That's not good
I imagine the finished portion of the viaduct must have hefty congestion

There's all sorts of debates around these highways. Some people want it to be completed while others want them to be destroyed as they take away the magnificent views to the sea and feel should be built underground instead.

South Africa has a habit of using American looking signage and German signage. Sometimes there's an American Green sign with German font and a German Blue sign with American font.

Cool.

What does that sign with two black horizontal parallel lines in the median strip mean?

that's a really strange sign that i can't remember. I would think it implies that there is a freeway (dual-carriage way) ahead, but i don't know why they would tell you that when you are already on one. Unless they are referring to the overhead road. I stand to be corrected. I am going to try and investigate this. My 5 year driver's license is about to expire in a month and clearly i am getting rusty. LOL

It looks like a big equals sign (=) so perhaps it's some sort of post-aparthied symbol, meaning that there is equality between everyone in South Africa nowadays.

??

Not at all, equality in South Africa has not been taken that far yet. LOL
This road sign has always been there, i am pretty sure its a sign for a dual carriageway.

That's pretty obvious just by looking further along the road - I can't see the need for it. Maybe the signwriters make up new signs to give themselves more work and hence better job security?

i actually think its very likely referring to the overhead road. but i agree that its probably a useless sign.
