I assume it's the Hindhead Tunnel in the A3 road between London and Portsmouth.

Correct. This completes the fully grade-separated (although not motorway standard) link from suburban SW London to Portsmouth.

Edit: Not quite correct. There still appears to be an at grade roundabout at Liss, Hampshire.

And a link was completed when they built the Twyford Down section of the M3, removing the at-grade junction at Hockley Cross. This completes the second, more direct, link (save for the roundabout at Liss). :P

The A3 looks like a nice road, why don't they just **** it and add a hard shoulder?

So very soon, you'll be able to drive from London / M25 all the way down to Portsmouth, no stoppages, no stupid roundabouts? If that's the case, next time I'm in the UK, I have to try the new road out. It may also take some traffic away from the M3.

There's still the roundabout at Liss, but that doesn't really matter, its not with a very busy road, and the roundabout isn't going to go away any time soon

They take a lot of effort to push London - Portsmouth traffic onto the A3, and have done for quite some time. Hindhead will mean there's no obvious bad section on the map (though near Guildford is pretty sub-par)

There's not much point in adding a hard shoulder, other than as part of a widening scheme (possibly needed through to Hog's Back, but not going to happen as Guildford is in the way, but that's the only place).

As far as I can see, the only benefit of making it a motorway would be to cause the 'blue line brigade' to notice it. The bit from the M25 to the A31 might as well become motorway if it's widened to D3 (and has the driveways and sideturns removed), but there's really little point in motorway conversion at the moment.

What should be done is numbering/renumbering the junctions so the whole route is covered, giving the route A12/A14/A42/A55 sort of status in Atlases - a primary DC important enough to have junction numbers.

When are they going to open the Hindhead Tunnel? I think the new bypass aound Hindhead is going to make A3 to a good road with at least dual carriageway all the way from London to Portsmouth. But when do they open this new section?

It's like the tunnel is awesome and I'm happy for the A3 and the UK, but that roundabout in Liss is like the ******* huge-arse party pooper. GET RID OF IT! Make a grade-separated junction and have an almost-motorway all the way from London to Portsmouth. I would gladly smash that roundabout up myself!

There is not a particular issue with this roundabout most of the time, however, I witnessed almost overturned lorries there twice(both lost part of their load) It caused huge delay and several miles queue.

------

Sometime ago I noticed a new construction site between J9 and J10 on M25. I checked in the interet and found this:

Quote:
A new Motorway Service Area (MSA) is being built on the M25 at Cobham. The MSA will be accessed between J9 & J10 of the M25, some 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometres) south east of J10 in Surrey. It will be accessible from both sides of the carriageway, and will be situated on the south-side of the carriageway.

The UK seems to get dissed for its motorway network, but there are lots of grade separated dual carriageways that would easily be an motorway / freeway elsewhere e.g A90, A14, A55, A34 etc. is there such a map that shows all these together with the motorways as the same type of road.

Michelin maps show "dual carriageways with motorway characteristics". However I think you'll be disappointed as to the extent of them, but they are a pretty accurate reflection of what doesn't have driveways and other such things that would negate freeway standard.

Also France has a lot of voie express as well - in fact more than us, so it's not as if we are the only country that has a lot of non-motorway motorway-esque roads.

No, they wouldn't as they are interspersed by at-garde junctions.

Many many of them have driveways (oddly Michelin gives part of the A34 with at-grade right turns the fake motorway rating) and other such things that wouldn't be allowed on motorways. If you look, a load of roads have good bits let down by a frequent, short sub par stretches.

Plus, outside of cities, shoulders on freeways are pretty much mandatory. Thus we have part of the A2, A27 and A494, bits of the A1 and A720 in Scotland, the Runcorn expressways (maybe), Newry bypass and that's about it. Less than 100 miles, probably struggling to make 50.

And as I have said, France has lots of these types of roads - the long distance ones (N12, N165) normally to a better standard than ours.
