Why can you at British tollbooths only pay with cash or tag and not with credit card?

Most tolls are small amounts and the toll operator will make a loss on the transaction when you factor in the processing and other charges. Every wondered why fast food restaurants, small shops and pubs never used to take cards? and now many of they do, there's a minimum spend of £5 or something? it's these charges.

Add to that, the larger routes are busy (Tyne, Mersey, Dartford. Especially Dartford) and chip and pin would take even longer than someone trying to find change in their purse. The booths will create serious congestion (not that that isn't already an issue at Dartford).

So we're looking at the M4 and M48 crossing into Wales, the M6 Toll and possibly the Humber Bridge as places where the toll is big enough that the charges by banks, VISA and Mastercard don't kill all the overhead and congestion at the booths isn't really an issue. The Severn Bridges don't take credit card, though I couldn't find anything stopping them other than that they can take whatever they feel like as payment (though must accept legal tender on the M4 as a debt has been created).

Nah
All toll operators in Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and in other countries, you can pay by card, no matter how busy it is, and you don't use your pin at all. It's just a matter of card in, card out and go. There is no reason why they can't implement this in the UK. It's just another matter of typical British inefficiency. Paying and waiting for change takes longer then paying by card. And in Milan, it gets a lot busier.
Severn Bridge is well over 10 pounds now for a van, there is no reason why they won't let you pay by card. Dartford and Severn Bridge accept euros, but notes only and change back in sterling at a hideous rate.
But congestion will NEVER be an issue when paying with cards, if anything else it may speed things up a bit. Toll operators get their money, and the worst thing that could happen to you, is that you run an overdraft on your bank, as payments at toll booths without using a pin, means that the machine won't talk to your bank first to see if you have enough funds in your account. Like I said, card in, card out and go.
Costs won't be an issue with large amounts of traffic going through, and if machines in multistorey car-parks accept cards all over Europe (without pin) for the smallest amounts, then it is time for Britain to step into the 21st century, and do the same.

Yep. There is simply no reason why you couldn't pay with cards on any toll road/bridge/tunnel.

Yes, but unless a vast majority of people pay by card (and why on earth would you for amount that's loose change - Severn bridges excepted), you are going to need to pay that anyway. The Severn Bridges are required by law to give free crossing to blue badge holders - they must go visit a manned station to get waved through. You can have buckets for exact change if you want (though they actually don't have many on the Second Severn Crossing - most lanes are manned). It's also easier on the Severn Bridges to work out what are band A/band B/band C vehicles if there's a member of staff.

That said, I don't see why the Severn Bridges (though I disagree strongly with not having to enter your pin - everywhere requires your PIN now, for fraud prevention reasons - I'm pretty sure it's legally required of them) can't take cards.

And far from being 'British inefficiency' not giving the option of paying by card makes everything more efficient, unless you are a numpty who doesn't come prepared, ignoring the warning signs.

IIRC, you can indeed pay by credit card on the Severn Bridges - they escort you to a cash machine and charge you for the escort as well as the toll. They are then usually gracious enough not to prosecute you for attempted toll evasion.

If you want to, you can pay by cheque if you have a cheque guarantee card, but that's an anachronism now.

Fine. Britain is right, and the rest of the world is wrong. British kitchen is the best, and in Europe everything is shit.

Well, the British are very proud of their roast dinners, and a lot of them, especially the ones who never travel, but even some of my colleagues believe that there is no good food to be found on the continent. The Europeans believe that British food is the reason of the collapse of the British Empire. Either way, if you want to eat well in Britain, you ought to have breakfast 3 times a day...

Sounds like you have an axe to grind my friend. I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on world cuisine where you can do just that.

You mean "British cuisine," or "British cookery" (or, in North America, where we don't say "cookery," "British cooking"). A kitchen is a room where such activities take place.
