My understanding, which I have not verified, is that the legal requirement for country stickers only applies to vehicles which do not indicate the country on the number plate i.e. older vehicles.

Yes, that is true. But not only with older vehicles. In the UK numberplates are issued either with or without Eurobands. Same in Denmark I think...

Yes, I know. I had Cymru sometime ago...

I agree it's probably rare, however, my friend, on Polish older style plates, got fined in Slovakia and it wasn't exception.

They also aren't up to anything like motorway standard. The A102(M) in south-east London was the worst - it has sharp bends and steep hills that you'd never normally get on a motorway. All four stretches that were downgraded were very short - less than a mile long in the case of the grandly-named M41 (now the A3220).

There are similar pathetic little bits of motorway in the middle of other cities, like Leeds and Newcastle; they should all get the same treatment as the ex-motorways in London, IMHO.

Hi, I have a questions:

- There is a motorway between Ireland border and Belfast in Northern Ireland? What is the A-1 highway? It is an expresway (2x2) or a normal road (1x1)?

I see in Google Maps that between the border of Ireland and Belfast are not a motorway for this I ask.

- Is the motorway network of Northern Ireland well developed?

I see in Google Maps that in Northern Ireland there are a few motorways, for example it is not necessary to link Belfast and Londonderry with a motorway?

I don't understand the new Google Maps legends, so perhaps are a dual expressways in Northern Ireland and I don't know.

There are some motorways around Belfast, some dual carriageways around the entire area. As far as I know it's motorway from Dublin to border, and dual carriageway to Belfast.

You're not planning an attack, are you?

The Newry Bypass is Motorway grade but designated as A Road. The A road north of Newry to the M1 motorway near Belfast is dual carriageway with at grade crossovers they propose to remove and some roundabouts too. It is not access controlled is the problem.....eg this . I would call it an expressway with 'issues' me

AADT does not justify a Motorway ( southern half of A1 is around 15k per day) ...save the 8 km nearest the M1 Motorway but they need to widen the M1 from there to Belfast to 3 lanes first I would think and gradually work south to Newry.

If they did all that they might get to a 112kph/70mph dualler standard in perhaps another 20 years or so.

The A1 is 2x2 and almost entirely grade-separated with no reservation crossings.

Yes, though a far cry from original plans, which were insane.

The only bit of motorway genuinely needed, but not in existence is a bypass of the substandard bit of A1 between the M1 and Hillsborough.

No it isn't. Derry is only important as it's on an island with only a few places bigger than it, and in a Province where it is the third city (but as Lisburn is right next to Belfast, the second city). Sure, the A5 to Strabane, A6 to Dungiven and A2 to the Airport duallings are/were needed, as are the A6 duallings on the north side of Lough Neagh but a motorway to Belfast would be seen as rather unnecessary the other side of the Irish Sea.

Use another mapping provider. Any will do. Even Apple Maps is better than new google maps...

Eh, there are at grade staggered junctions and roundabouts too. And the lack of access control. > http://goo.gl/maps/oOuCV

I did say "almost entirely", and said nothing about access control (which really doesn't matter on a route with that AADT).

They have closed many of the reservation crossings in the last few years.

It is just the top few miles, between the M1 and Hillsborough, that isn't up to a decent standard.

A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme

http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/roa...vement-scheme/

New Huntingdon bypass will be toll apparently.

BTW Upgrading A1 in The North is a matter of next few years
http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/roa...on-Improvement

A1(M) from Leeming to Barton and M8 from Bailleston to Newhouse. These will come to fruition relatively quick. Any idea where another upgrades to a full motorway standard might or might not take place?

Hi Guys,

I am looking for someone with hands-on experience and/or knowledge of British RFID vehicle identification trials performed in the 90s or noughties, ideally with an engineering or academic background.

If you are the person or know someone (or even know someone who knows someone) with this kind of experience, please get in touch with me via PM. No time wasters please. This is not a job offer or anything of this sort.

M3 Fleet Services.

Here is the view from the bridge connecting both, South and Northbound parts of the Fleet Services.

The bridge.

The motorway.

And the movies.

M4 Newport

http://www.m4newport.com/

The Welsh Government wants your views on a draft Plan, which aims to address transport related problems on the M4 around Newport. If implemented, it would lead to a motorway being built south of Newport.

Very much needed in South Wales. I used to deliver vans and trucks quite often to that region and it was traffic clogged back then (and we're talking the late 90's here). Hopefully they will widen the section between where the M4 splits and where the 2 Severn Crossings split to 5-6 lanes either side to cope with merging traffic.
