You clearly haven't been on a "black saturday"

Usually, the stretch from Lyon to the Spanish border is mostly queued on such days. Half of France is moving southward on those days. Traffic jams can occur even at night, since half European-Morrocans drive to Spain to take the ferry.

I haven't driven a lot of M-highways in the UK. A lot of 2/4 laned A-roads though. The only UK highway I've driven is the M6 (?) around Birmingham (tolled). Jams!

This is the north circular 406 not far from the hanger lane gyratory in west london. The traffic is less due to the school holidays, otherwise all the traffic would be crawling and 2-5mph.

Well, it's not wrong. It's his own experience. My personal experience is also not bad. I only hate the roundabouts.

British motorways are the best in the world at night... and the road surface is excellent in general.

For a start, you're at least partially wrong. UK road signage is very good and clear. As for good mannered road users... hmm, depends where in the UK you are.

Beautiful.

Beautiful.
Agreed MP...I don't see why there are so many complaints about British signage. I've been to many countries and I can honestly say that British road signs are probably the easiest to read in the world.

Exactly. I find British signing to be some of the best along with the German signage.

No offence to Americans, but it's far easier to read than American signage, IMO.

I miss England.

Sounds like you want to return home almost as much as me!

I do prefer the font used on the British road signs though and the colours. The dark green + white/yellow combination is very easy to read.

As far as I've seen it's not the usual signage on A- and cityroads that is so bad, but more the overhead portals (or how do you call them in english) on the motorways. Small fonts, chaotic lay-out etc. You really can't compare that to the german system.

Compared to where he's from, it's quite a step up.

The most boring three hours of my life were spent on a train in 2001 that was delayed because Railtrack was doing some repairs.

It happens occasionally. Rather them do repairs than have a major derailment.

I've lived in England for most of my life and travelled most of it by train and have rarely been delayed for more than 30 mins. You were very unlucky to have the experience you did. Still - anything has to be better than VIA rail surely?

Both my (American) wife and I are currently discussing the idea of moving back. It may involve sacrificing general standard of living, but the thing swinging the pendulum in the direction of moving back is a) more affordable healthcare, b) having little in common with people here and c) I want to go back to school, but it's insanely expensive here.
