They do. The other widely available one is from the AAA. (American Automobile Association. But, unlike their road maps and "Tour Books," they're sold to the public rather than given only to members.)

What are chances of a Chester-Newport (Cardiff) motorway to be built?

Wales is woefully underserved by road infrastructure.

There are dual carriageways, and the area in the middle is rural with little traffic. From Newport you might as well use M4 or M50-M5-M6.

We've been talking about you here by the way. Is it true that you believe the Netherlands should be one big suburban area, that it should give up its countryside because nature should be for bigger countries only???

Funny that I even understand it a bit just by combining my English and German. Never tried before…

I find it easy to understand written Dutch also, but I guess it makes sense, Germany on one side and the English on the other

Which brings to mind my favorite Yiddish word: kochleffel. Guess what it means. :-)

I wonder how many people are going to take down their tax-discs on Wednesday.

Basically the UK has so many mass surveillance equipments, CCTV, SPECS and ANPR's and the like, that the tax disc is no longer needed, they will just read plate number compare it to the DVLA database and then shaft you if you didn't pay the road tax

There is a Brit registered car here around the corner from me who has been without a disc for years...

British roads are so congested. Drove yesterday and today on M62 between Manchester and Leeds, 3 lanes each way (4 lanes on some sections) and all were full. I also drove on some secondary roads and most of them were congested (especially during morning and evening). Too many people have cars...

Yes, but the infratructure is also very bad. You got the M1 which passes through major city's in the UK. It happened to me that I stayed behind the person all the way from Luton to Sheffield. And the M62 - the only major East-West motorway... From Liverpool through Manchester to Leeds and Bradford it's nothing but chaos, but it's also a very busy area with those city's so close to each other with a few Penines in between. After Wakefield it's a lot quieter.
M6 is busy all the way from M1 to Preston. After that it's really nice to drive on. M5 is busy from Birmingham to Bristol but do-able. Risk of congestion is relatively low. Same goes for the M4. But everywhere where the big places are it's really busy...

England is the most densely populated country in Europe (if you exclude Cyprus and some of the principalities). Yet if you look at how many motorways (and even trunk dual carriageways) we have in comparison with other highly populated countries, we have very few proper motor roads for our population density. Our motorways are overloaded as there are so few of them trying to serve the country as good as possible, and because there are so relatively few motorways and congestion is bad, it is busy off the motorway. Our off-motorway roads also tend to be very poor. You don't tend to get the well aligned single carriageways that other countries in Europe get over here. Instead, you often get quite narrow roads which have had limited engineering other than tarmac put down nearly 100 years ago which plough through every town and village.

Well, England's got the population density of New Jersey or Belgium or the Netherlands....

EDIT: Started writing before Sotonsteve's post had appeared.

I've read that the UK has the highest average AADT of all motorway networks in Europe. I believe it was in the 80,000 range, with the Netherlands being number #2.

It would follow the route of the A483/A5/A49 if ever built I think. The A483 is a good dual carriageway around Wrexham, the A5 has a couple of dualled stretches between Wrexham and Shrewsbury but then the A49 south of Shrewsbury to Hereford and Newport is a single lane where you usually get stuck behind a truck for most of the trip.

That's what you get when you put the population of Romania+Bulgaria+Greece+Albania+FYROM+Serbia+Bosnia+Croatia+Slovenia in an area the size of just Romania alone.
