I think I will be using the M3 a lot over the coming week or so, it looks like I'll be working a few junctions down it for a few days, I'll let you know how it is.

M1-A5 Link Road, Dunstable

New £162 million M1-A5 link road finally open for use

A LONG-awaited motorway link road officially opened today after two and a half years and £162 million.

The new M1-A5 link road is a 2.8 mile dual carriageway which links the A5 with the M1 through the creation of a new motorway junction – junction 11A.

This has created a northern bypass for Dunstable, which will take the heavy traffic away from the town centre.

about two months after the road opened to traffic. Good to see local news on the pulse!

Yes, I know schemes have a finishing up stage, but...

They're reporting, and timely, on the official opening, and say so ("officially opened today..."). Why was that (I mean the opening) done now rather than two months ago?

Jesus Christ.! €30m+ A KM across open and level farmland and it hasn't even got a hard shoulder. Spain would not spend €30m a km on a mountain tunnel section.

Could it be that land prices in the densely populated areas of southern England are a little higher than in Spain generally?

The Humber Bridge has been given Grade I listed status on the 36th anniversary of its opening.
On this occasion let me share some photos I took a few years ago:

A marvellous bridge from a time when England saw pork-spending road projects.

The bridge has only recently gone above 20k AADT.

But it does save a huge amount of time for those 20k vehicles compared with the fastest alternative route. I'd say that is better than spending the same amount on a bridge that will have 50k AADT but only saves 5 minutes for each of those vehicles.

Land prices will undoubtedly be much higher, wages for workers on the project too.

Might be more interesting to see if there is still a difference once you adjust those costs to levels that would be paid in Spain (or elsewhere). If a big difference remains then there are obviously inefficiencies somewhere.

Broken down lorry (at the entrance to the western tunnel) caused chaos today, traffic jams were stretching half way to Kent

You can see signs ready for the situations when northbound traffic has to be routed via bridge:

Used to be like that most days before they took the toll booths out.
