Smal utility job in Catford area caused A205 (South Circular) to look like this:

I didn't look past the Hither Green railway bridge but I would say for some drivers it might be a few hours wait. Many lorry drivers switched engines off and stood outside the cabs.

It is amazing how HGV traffic in South London depends in one vital artery.

I passed by the Mersey Gateway on the train a few days ago, seems to be making good progress.

A video briefly explaining the history of planned London ring roads:

A lot of effort was invested into making this video, but some sections of it are very childish and I am not sure that all information presented is accurate.

The new bridge at Queensferry Crossing opened for traffic today. Unfortunately, the traffic was heavy as a vehicle broke down on the hard shoulder, causing massive delays.

Delays as Queensferry Crossing opens to traffic for the first time

The good news (for me) is that I should drive on it next week (that's after using the old bridge numerous times in the last 2 years, and witnessing how the new bridge got built).

You might struggle - and not because, unlike today, the entire driving population of the Central Belt are wanting to go across, but because it will be closed from the 1st to the 6th to do the various ceremonies (including the Queen opening the second road crossing there in her reign, 53 years to the day after the last one) - and probably also to finish the works (a little bit more than just removing the cones, one guesses) related to that bridge (the ones related to the other one will take another ~2 months).

Some recent Highways England videos for forthcoming schemes:

They also published a video of congestion at Lofthouse Interchange (M1/M62). This is scheduled for reconstruction 'as an all-direction free-flowing interchange' in the next few years but they won't be publishing options until next year. I guess the video is their way of saying it will be £500m well spent!

You were correct. I drove there on Monday/Tuesday night, around 1 a.m., and I had to use the old bridge, as the new one was closed.

A couple of controversial Highways England schemes had Preferred Route Announcements recently.

First, the A303 Stonehenge scheme was confirmed as a 2.9km bored tunnel through the World Heritage Site (WHS), with GSJs at the A345 and A360, and a northern bypass of the nearby village of Winterbourne Stoke. On the western side of the WHS the route was moved slightly further north and closer to the existing road to reduce impact. Although the extreme £1.6bn price tag for 12km of dual carriageway is largely to remove the road from sight of the stones for cultural and environmental reason, there is still a lot of opposition, and UNESCO have threatened to remove WHS status as they did in Dresden in response to a bridge scheme.

Second, Option B was selected for the A5036 Port of Liverpool scheme. Though much lower profile, this is in many ways a more remarkable scheme, consisting primarily of a new dual carriageway along the length of Rimrose Valley Country Park at surface level (no tunnel). This is slightly mitigated by the fact that the park itself was only reclaimed from landfill in the 90s. The scheme hasn't been picked up nationally or internationally to anything like the extent of the Stonehenge scheme, but there is significant local opposition. The new road will cost around £250m, with no intermediate junctions along its 5km length, but with signalized junctions at either end; a short section of existing A5758 will also be dualled.

Consultation opened on the M54 to M6/M6 (Toll) Link Road today. This scheme will provide new freeflow connections between three motorways in the West Midlands. The budget is £250m-£500m, with these options:

A section of A1 (M) will also open to traffic tomorrow:
The first phase of upgrading the A1 to motorway standard between Leeming and Barton is due for completion and will open to traffic on Friday 22 September.

The southern section between junction 51 at Leeming and junction 52 at Catterick will become a three-lane motorway and the current speed restrictions will be lifted. Drivers will benefit from the extra capacity and improved road information to help keep traffic flowing smoothly on the six mile section between Leeming and Catterick.

Over the autumn period our focus will concentrate on the remainder of the project including completing the local access road between Scotch Corner and Brompton-on-Swale and opening the new Fort Bridge. This will lead us to our next major milestones which will be the opening of the motorway between Scotch Corner interchange and junction 56 Barton and Catterick junction to Scotch Corner in winter 2017/18.
