I was stuck in a Victoria line train on Tuesday for about 20 minutes to go from Oxford circus to Green park. I don't get mad though, I understand these things happen. What infuriated me was the disappearing buses on Monday. Apparently they decided to use portals to miss out my stop due to roadworks down the road. Buses are shit.

Why can't tube trains be replaced by conveyor belts moving at tremendous speed?

The platforms could be slower conveyor belts so you step from one belt to the next getting faster with each belt before you whoosh down the tunnel.

You would need sponges at the end of the platform in case someone failed to get onto the main belt in time of course.

There's a conveyor belt at Toronto airport that goes faster in the middle than at the ends. It blew my tiny little mind! Took me a little while to wok out how it works - very clever.

I am currently going through my third redundancy consultation process in 4 years. Survived the last two ok, but every time this happens there's more at stake. Anyone have any tips for maintaining motivation with all this crap - oh and motivating my team at the same time who are looking to me for advice and reassurance when I've got precious little of either.

I saw that on the news years ago I think. Isn't it a kind of concertina effect that opens up towards the middle?

Yeah that's it -vey vey clever.

There's a link to Youtube of it here in fact http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCBGScMK0is

...although it doesn't look that dramatic in the clips.

This does sound rather intriguing - although the train belt would probably need to stop at each platform like your standard Tube train, otherwise the problem would be getting off the main belt in time when it arrived at your stop. You'd have a great time attempting to step from the fast-moving 'train' belt onto the slower platform belts without losing your balance and/or causing a human pile-up.
Imagine what it would be like at rush hour.

I cycled to work today 22 mile round trip.

Never really appreciated how will Birmingham and the Black Country are.

I cycled from Erdington to Rowley Regis via Perry Barr, Handsworth Wood (up Hamstead Hill), Handsworth, Smethwick, Langley then to my destination and vice versa.

2500 calories burnt and a nice tan too.

Hopefully I'll wake up with a six pack

So apparently it's no longer appropriate to use the phrase "chink of light" when discussing the Chinese economy.

No, but it is in London.

I should have said that it's a venue I'm after...right up in town.
